Opened an spg biz and met 5k spend threshhold. After recieving the signup bonus i returned an item that costed $3500 due to the fact that the item was not as described when i made the purchase. Amex emailed me that i am no longer eligible for the signup bonus (they claim it was point fraud) and rep on phone said that they will be clawing back the points from my spg acc. another rep told me that if i reach the spending threshold again then they may reconsider giving me the points back. anyone have experience with this or know what will happen next. i met the threshold again... points havent been clawed yet...

Didn't realize it was the same guy.
Yup, sent him here, unsure if there was anything worthwhile upthread, but worth the look.

What does your actual SPG account show.

Few options:

1) Nothing will happen to the points in your SPG account.
2) The amex balance being reduced is the first step towards Amex ultimately having SPG negative the account.
3) or, like Citi, Amex has reduced your balance on their end, and any spending on your cc will go towards that debt before any more points are send to SPG.

I think 1 and 3 are two sides of the same option. Nothing will happen on spg side but on amex side it will be negative.

They are different options, will Amex count the negative, or not, but I don't think 1 is an option

Nope.

1 means points are safe.
2 means points are not safe.
3 means the points are safe but future earning will be used to offset.

So by 1 you mean points are safe in spg and points will be sent by amex for any further spend? Doesn't seem likely.

Correct, that is an option. Feel free to rank them in the order of likelihood, as you see fit.

I got a retention bonus for keeping the green card, then got a bonus to upgrade to gold, then got a bonus to upgrade to platinum. I then downgraded back to gold around 3 weeks ago. Today I got an email for a bonus to upgrade to platinum. Can this cause a red flag if I upgrade and then downgrade back to gold for a second time?

There should be a thread for this, or something more general for this idea, but you are one lucky fellow

You will get it clawed back, that's pretty much a guarantee. You can negate the damage if you really want to though.

not if it was addressed to him. if he used a code meant for someone else they will claw back and if they find out you MS they will claw back. that is based on my experience using purchased code and lots of data points about using MS

You can close your cards with a negative MR balance.
