Are you serious? The last post in that thread was from 2011.
I know, but wanted to know if it changed since then...dont want to get slapped with a bill after closing the card......

Are you talking about SPG? Yes, I would say it's safe to use them.

I closed an MR account with large negative balance and was not charged anything. A year or two later I opened up another MR card and was given a different rewards number with 0 balance  ;D

I didn't think it was worth a hard pull in the likely scenario that they would assign me the MR account with the large negative balance. But then I got a nice business NL offer so I thought it was worth a shot to see if they would assign me a new rewards account since it was a while ago already.

"Opened an spg biz and met 5k spend threshhold. After recieving the signup bonus i returned an item that costed $3500 due to the fact that the item was not as described when i made the purchase. Amex emailed me that i am no longer eligible for the signup bonus (they claim it was point fraud) and rep on phone said that they will be clawing back the points from my spg acc. another rep told me that if i reach the spending threshold again then they may reconsider giving me the points back. anyone have experience with this or know what will happen next. i met the threshold again... points havent been clawed yet. but my amex acc is showing a negative spg balance.."

Reporting back.
My statement closed today and i saw no change to the negative SPG point balance in my AMEX acc.
Also no clawback from my SPG acc.
Called AMEX and they said the case is still under review but seems like it will close in my favor due to the fact that i met the required spend despite the return that i made.
Rep said my point balance should zero out soon and they will credit points for all spending iv'e done while the balance was negative.
6-8 weeks to process , hope it actually works out!

I'm having a problem with my Delta account.
Signed up with the 75k bonus, a referral bonus that I did posted right away but the points for regular spend and sign up bonus still didn't post- 2 months. I called them and they said that my account is under review regarding spending for the sign up bonus all the spend is legitimate- no returns
