or you could become BFF with the CSR. I always find I get a better result when the person Im talking to likes me and wants to continue talking with me.

This is my call in checklist:

1: Make a note of their name and address them by their name with proper pronunciation.
2: Figure out their emotional state. (happy,sad, depressed, angry or discouraged) Find ways to create positive emotions or add to them.
3: Find a common hate or love. Release stress if possible.
4: Compliment on how excellent they are at being a CSR and ask to talk with a CSRS to let them know also.
5: Ask for a direct number and bid farewell.

Also, make sure your contact with the CSR was memorable and don't abuse favors. Its ok to have more than one BFF CSR per CC.

Chase and Citi won't offer that, but at Amex they all have extension numbers.

I even found very interesting, that when I call and ask for that specific rep by the extension number, they usually tell me: "maybe I can help you out?", or "she is not in right now, maybe I would be able to help", so I would say: "no thanks, I would her/him specifically, because I have great experience with her/him".

After such a conversation you could indeed start with the rep that picked up the phone, because he'll do everything in the world just to prove he that he is a good rep as well.

If a girl is so narrow-minded she'll turn me down for sweet-talking an Amex rep, I'm not interested anyway.

So that's how it played out, I didn't get 15/25k, but I did get 6k, will post in 1-2 weeks. If I get 6k a month, it might just be worth it to keep this card open...

Simple as 'I'm considering cancelling and my friend got offered 15/25k, what can you do for me?', there was also an ironclad explanation of why I'd like to cancel (sorry, I don't get paid enough on here ($0.00) to share that).

It got ugly for me too!

After explaining that "I now have the gold which works just as good," she - Maureen, for the record - piped up: "So you got the bonus for the platinum...uh... a massive bonus!!! 100,000!, are you also going to get a bonus for the gold!?!?" Thanks for this thread, i was quiet ready, so I simply, asked for her name. I than asked for her to spell it out for me. (Besides the affect of shifting the conversation, I think she got a little afraid.) She then went on to tell me the greatness of the gold, bla bla bla, and told me what will happen as soon as she hits cancel. I realized that at this point I just have listen silently until she hit the "terrible"button, which she finaly did.

Once i called and had a rep named LaTasha and she was so nasty so I just hung up and called again and got a nice rep who was friendly and chatty, I explained that I travel from ORD which no longer has presidents club (it was converted to red carpet club) and since i can't get lounge access to RCC i want to cancel my card.

I canceled earlier this week and said that with a new baby travelling doesn't sound as fun as it did when we were pregnant, so I don't need all the travel benefits anymore.
