AMEX Plat CSR getting ugly
« on: July 12, 2011, 10:24:02 PM »
Signed up for the Amex Plat in May. got a total of 110,000 bonus points using the 100k promo + the InSite promo. Also took advantage of the $200 is airline fees with AA.

The points posted a few days ago. Called up tonight to cancel the card and I got an agent who was really tough. Conversation went like this:
CSR: So why are you closing the acct?
Me: because I no longer need the benefit of lounge access. I have status with Skyteam and get into lounges that way.
CSR: If your with skyteam, then why did you use the $200 credit with AA?
Me: Because thats the only airline that charges me fees: Im not elite with them.
CSR: Uhu. And how many bonus points did we give you when you signed up?
*Click*!

I decided to hang up. It seemed as though he might be inclined to somehow ding me for the value of hte points and airline fees.

Anyone else with similar experience? Will I get the same result when I call back another agent?

Called back again: Ask to cancel the card, get transfered to the appropriate dept. This time a woman answers:
CSR: How are you Mr. Eliteflyer?
Me: Good How are you?
CSR: Im a little puzzled. You signed up for this card in January, got the bonus, then canceled it. Now you got it a 2nd time CLICK!

Doesnt seem that they want to let me out easy on this one. Maybe Ill wait a few days to try again. When I canceled my first Amex Plat card in Feb, the CSR was so nice about it.

Maybe call to downgrade to a free card and then cancel if you want less of a fight.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

Has that been your experience? I believe they offered to downgrade me to a zync card for a 30ish annual fee when I called to cancel the first card back in February

Tried just now: The account membership dept closes at 10:55 ET, so just missed it. Will try my luck again tomorrow

It was really easy for me to cancel. I said my gold cards were the right fit for me right now. She said "ok brb"  then came back 2 minutes later and said it was cancelled and my $450 was refunded. Was very painless I was surprised.

You had 2 plat cards though so that's different  8)

They FRd you on your remaining accounts? I dont have any other charge cards with AMEX. Just a SPG BIZ, and a rather dormant HH Amex with less than $1000 of avail. credit. Also, I was FRd 2 years ago...I suppose they could do it again.

I got the big guilt trip too last week.  They would only prorate the annual fee too although I eventually got it.  I kept saying that I was told I had 60 days to try out the card with all its benefits and I could cancel if I didn't want to continue.

if you're not ready to weather a tough csr you prob should skip out on the plat cards... they usually make it tough/very uncomfortable to cancel.

I wouldn't use that argument if you have other Amex card. Someone in the household losing their job is a potential credit risk, and could possibly trigger an F/R (if it gets logged somewhere).

personally, i dont know what the big deal is, if they ask you a question youre not comfortable answering, simply ask them if its necessary to answer the question. no reason to get into a whole song and dance with them

If Amex FRs you for say a Platinum card, does that mean you can still apply for a Gold card and they won't see the FR?  Or does it stay on your Amex account as opposed to a specific card type?

I think we have to define uncomfortable.
We all could not, and should not, care less what a random CSR thinks of us. The question is only what is the effect on our wallet, I.E. will they agree to cancel it without harming our reputation with Amex or not.
