When you take a taxi by yourself where do you sit the front seat or back alone?

My first time in a taxi alone (I was 15ish), the taxi pulls up I open the front passenger door, driver looks at me for a 10 beat and picks up the pile of papers sitting on the front seat and tossed them in the back. At that point I realized in a taxi, if you're alone, you sit in the back. It was a very awkward ride.

Same here, except it took me a few more times till I got it.

If we are 3 ppl, I give the driver that look as I'm opening the door and take the front

Why would you want to sit in the front with the driver? It's bad enough when they keep trying to make conversation, after repeatedly being given 1 word answers to shut them up. I'm paying for a ride, not a travel buddy

Got a ride from an isreali monit driver this Thursday and asked him this very question,he told me that he personally thinks it's a disgusting rude thing, it's invading his personal space, as he explained that he's used to having space and room next to him, not having to drive with both arms stuffed to one side to avoid hitting the passenger.
 And offering the passenger the whole back to have his own personal space but then he comes to sit in the front he found to be very un-polite,
 Doubt you will hear this response from every taxi(monit) driver as the real Israelis enjoy having company and couldn't give a hoot as long as their making money.

I guess because were sticking with the assumptions that it's normal for the passenger to go in the back and not take shot gun.
 So for most humans he's not worried and doesn't have this on his mind thinking maybe there's this one guy who will decide to come sit next to me.
