5% categories for fourth quarter of 2017:
Dept. stores and Walmart

There are three possibilities for how many points are earned. In the following examples, the effective rates are assuming you cash out the points for 1 cent each, but if you can transfer them to Sapphire Preferred or Ink, the effective rate could be much higher.
  • Cardholders without a Chase checking account
1 base point per dollar for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories.
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 1 point, an effective rate of 1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 50 points, an effective rate of 5%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 500 points, an effective rate of 5%.
    Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7500 points, an effective rate of 5%.
  • Cardholders with a Chase checking account in older program
1 base point per dollar plus 10% of the base points plus 10 points per transaction for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories.
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 11.1 points, an effective rate of 11.1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 61 points, an effective rate of 6.1%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 520 points, an effective rate of 5.2%.
    Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7660 points, an effective rate of 5.11%.
  • Cardholders with a Chase checking account in newer program
1 base point per dollar for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories. Annual bonus of 10% of the total of base and bonus points (until February 2016).
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 1 point on the next statement and .1 points at year's end, an effective rate of 1.1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 50 points on the next statement and 5 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 500 points on the next statement and 50 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.
Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7500 points on the next statement and 750 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.

you can always go the gift card unload through ap route

What groceries in Brooklyn offer this at a rate that's worth it for 5%? What about sales tax?

I'm assuming the SR in brooklyn sells also but not sure. I guess once you take off the 1% purchase fee  and subtract the almost 2% you could've gotten anyway with ap you get around 5%. AFAIK they don't charge tax on gift cards

AP?  :o
I sent this message to Amazon on 11/30:

Quote
Dear Chase Representative,

I understand that one of the bonus categories for the
first quarter of 2012 is amazon.com.

Does this include payments made using the Freedom card on
the Amazon Payments website, https://payments.amazon.com?

All the best,

Good Sam

One long week later, this was their reply:
Quote
Dear Mr. Sam,

Thank you for contacting Chase with your inquiry about the
5% cash back categories for 2012.

I wish to inform you that currently, we don?t have the
list of exclusions and inclusions of merchant categories
for 2012. The 2012 categories does include Gas Station
and Amazon.Com.

Further, when a merchant accepts VISA or MasterCard as a
form of payment, the merchant must select a category that
will identify the business type. This category is used
when determining if the transaction is eligible for
rewards. If a merchant is not a specialty store and
provides a variety of products, the merchant may choose a
general category descriptor rather than a specific
category. For example, a store that sells clothes, gas,
automotive parts, and groceries may choose the category
?Superstores? rather than ?Groceries? or ?Gas.?

When a transaction is authorized to your account, rewards
are automatically determined based on the category that
has been designated by the merchant.

I request you to wait for some more time till the list of
merchants under 5% cash back categories for 2012 is
announced.

If you have any further questions, please reply using the
Secure Message Center.

Thank you,

Smita Medhekar

Don't think there is any difference and yes they transfer back and forth instantly.

Can use for bookings on Continental partners, not to SPG.

Though I'd imagine you'd probably get the best redemption values when xferred to hotels (cash + points option), there are plenty of good redemptions when xferring to airlines as well.

MR, but at a ratio that makes it not worth it. It's usually 3 MR for 1 SPG, but they now have a 25% off promo so it comes out to like 2.25 MR for 1 SPG.

I'd like to donate to yeshivos to maximize the $1500 this quarter, but the first charges don't seem to be getting the 5x points. The rep said I should wait longer to see 6-8 weeks, but in her system they are look like schools, not charities. I suppose if they don't post I could call back and try to get an adjustment but I'm wondering if anyone has experience with this.
