5% categories for fourth quarter of 2017:
Dept. stores and Walmart

There are three possibilities for how many points are earned. In the following examples, the effective rates are assuming you cash out the points for 1 cent each, but if you can transfer them to Sapphire Preferred or Ink, the effective rate could be much higher.
  • Cardholders without a Chase checking account
1 base point per dollar for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories.
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 1 point, an effective rate of 1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 50 points, an effective rate of 5%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 500 points, an effective rate of 5%.
    Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7500 points, an effective rate of 5%.
  • Cardholders with a Chase checking account in older program
1 base point per dollar plus 10% of the base points plus 10 points per transaction for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories.
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 11.1 points, an effective rate of 11.1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 61 points, an effective rate of 6.1%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 520 points, an effective rate of 5.2%.
    Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7660 points, an effective rate of 5.11%.
  • Cardholders with a Chase checking account in newer program
1 base point per dollar for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories. Annual bonus of 10% of the total of base and bonus points (until February 2016).
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 1 point on the next statement and .1 points at year's end, an effective rate of 1.1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 50 points on the next statement and 5 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 500 points on the next statement and 50 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.
Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7500 points on the next statement and 750 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.

What are you trying to do, benjie, buy tons of liquor in way that will qualify for Freedom Q1 bonus?

I bought liquor and decided to use my freedom and hope it would qualify. It didn't. If it would have I would have used for my other wine/liquor purchases through Q1.

I'm trying to understand your goal. This quarter's bonus category was really an easy one.

Not saying it is a hard one. Im not saying I won't meet it. But if I am already making a purchase, I might as well use the best card for it. Don't you think so.

I bought winter gloves at a store in the five towns for half off what they normally cost. They did not tell me that they were a final sell.

Stupidly, I put it on my chase freedom.

Anyway I can get reimbursed from the credit card company? Does it have any protection like Amex or SP?

Ok. Thanks. They said they can make a dispute, but I shop normally in the store, so i dont want the store to look down on me when I go back there.

I did return protection with Chase (Freedom). Was a bit of a hassle, but in the end they're sending me a check.
Workflowy. You won't know what you're missing until you try it.

Can anyone recommend a grocery store to buy $500 GC's somewhere in NYC? For Freedom Q1. I can't find any so far.

You don't go grocery shopping in general? You can always just buy store credit at your go to supermarket.

Yep that's our last resort, trying to go the GC route first if we can.

Check Pathmark as well.

Thanks, I can check the one by Atlantic Ave, that's not too far into Brooklyn.

Can anyone recommend which grocery stores sell Visa Gift Cards in the 5 towns, preferably $500 Visa Gift Cards?
