5% categories for fourth quarter of 2017:
Dept. stores and Walmart

There are three possibilities for how many points are earned. In the following examples, the effective rates are assuming you cash out the points for 1 cent each, but if you can transfer them to Sapphire Preferred or Ink, the effective rate could be much higher.
  • Cardholders without a Chase checking account
1 base point per dollar for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories.
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 1 point, an effective rate of 1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 50 points, an effective rate of 5%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 500 points, an effective rate of 5%.
    Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7500 points, an effective rate of 5%.
  • Cardholders with a Chase checking account in older program
1 base point per dollar plus 10% of the base points plus 10 points per transaction for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories.
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 11.1 points, an effective rate of 11.1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 61 points, an effective rate of 6.1%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 520 points, an effective rate of 5.2%.
    Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7660 points, an effective rate of 5.11%.
  • Cardholders with a Chase checking account in newer program
1 base point per dollar for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories. Annual bonus of 10% of the total of base and bonus points (until February 2016).
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 1 point on the next statement and .1 points at year's end, an effective rate of 1.1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 50 points on the next statement and 5 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 500 points on the next statement and 50 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.
Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7500 points on the next statement and 750 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.

Unless you have maxed out via 5/24 why upgrade an existing card?  Why not get the $150 sign-up bonus?

Went into branch today, while was there opened the freedom unlimited 1-2-3,said 2 weeks will get back to me(only reason I would do it online is that I don't have to walk out of the bank with a folder of papers,(more garbage)have to add to my collection.

After all the changes chase has done, why don't they just make it the same as discover who has 1.5% everywhere and the 5% categories? Why have it split across 2 cards?

5/24 includes store cards like amazon ?! And assuming there going to count the freedoms as 2 different cards?

just looked at 1 of my gas transaction from last quarter and it shows this:
Bonus from 1Q 5% category: Gas stations   1,937.68
+ 10% Extra points per $1 you spend   50.50
+ Bonus 10 points on every purchase   10.00
+ 1% (1 Pt)/$1 earned on all purchases   504.95
what is the 10% extra points per$1 and the bonus 10 points on every purchase?
I have a checking account- if that has anything to do with it

They count all new accounts from what I have heard, so mortgages, auto loans, etc. also count.
Yup. They counted student loans for me.

Why is shoprite pita just go to customer service desk and only buy 1 or 2, don't you go to shoprite more then once a month?

No I don't. It's not convenient and the one by me insists on calling the cc company before to validate the charge

Oh by me you just have to purchase a variable load one from the customer service desk and if you do not purchase more then 1000$ at a shot they do not bother you.

Because BJs charges a lower fee.
