5% categories for fourth quarter of 2017:
Dept. stores and Walmart

There are three possibilities for how many points are earned. In the following examples, the effective rates are assuming you cash out the points for 1 cent each, but if you can transfer them to Sapphire Preferred or Ink, the effective rate could be much higher.
  • Cardholders without a Chase checking account
1 base point per dollar for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories.
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 1 point, an effective rate of 1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 50 points, an effective rate of 5%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 500 points, an effective rate of 5%.
    Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7500 points, an effective rate of 5%.
  • Cardholders with a Chase checking account in older program
1 base point per dollar plus 10% of the base points plus 10 points per transaction for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories.
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 11.1 points, an effective rate of 11.1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 61 points, an effective rate of 6.1%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 520 points, an effective rate of 5.2%.
    Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7660 points, an effective rate of 5.11%.
  • Cardholders with a Chase checking account in newer program
1 base point per dollar for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories. Annual bonus of 10% of the total of base and bonus points (until February 2016).
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 1 point on the next statement and .1 points at year's end, an effective rate of 1.1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 50 points on the next statement and 5 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 500 points on the next statement and 50 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.
Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7500 points on the next statement and 750 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.

So I was going over my Freedom purchases since July to see where I am holding for the x5 quarterly restaurants and I realized that I've had like 4 purchases in Essen NY Deli totaling about $300 that I wasn't being given x5 for. So I sent a SM to Chase asking why and they responded that in their system its under Supermarket/Grocery so that's why it wasn't eligible. So I responded that it's not a Grocery store and that its a Restaurant that I frequent often and I sent a link to their website for them to see. They responded that they forwarded the concern to a Manager in the Rewards department for further review. Lets see if I can get them to change it.........

In Monsey most of the food stores are coded as supermarket. Don't get double points on Sapphire as well. I actually got 5x when Freedom had grocery store quarter...

Hello Eli,

Thank you for contacting Chase about the cash back bonus.

Please understand, that each transaction billed to your
account is assigned a merchant category code. This code
determines the category it is listed under. This code is
determined prior to sale by the merchant and their
corresponding bank. We have no control over what merchant
category code a transaction will bill under.

As a gesture of our commitment to you, we have adjusted
the bonus reward points for your transactions to Essen NY
Deli for $143.87. The bonus adjustment of 719 reward
points has been added to your account effective
immediately and will be on your next billing statement for
review. Please note that should this type of transaction
post to your account in the future, we are unable to
guarantee an adjustment of points.

If you need any other assistance, you can send us a secure
message.

Thank You,

I guess it helped to ask....................

Chase site says 4th quarter category is "Hiliday Shopping". Any clue what that is? I'm debating changing one of my 2 Freedoms to a Unlimited...
I am sometimes accused of overthinking things. I am still mulling over whether that accusation has merit.

I don't think that's known yet. Dan said on DDMS "likely Amazon". Time will tell

I know that if you downgrade a CSP to a Freedom this quarter, all restaurant charges you made on the CSP will be credited at 5x.

Does anyone know if the travel purchases I made on CSP will be reduced to 1x?

If getting 5X on restaurants coincides with removing the previously credited 2X on restaurants, I suppose they could also remove the 2X on travel.

So i had the same issue and sent SM to chase but was not successful, anything i can still do?  SEE:
Thank you for contacting Chase about the rewards points on
your Freedom account ending in ****.

We appreciate you as a customer and would be glad to
assist you. Let me share, the rewards adjustments you
requested cannot be made because the merchant is not in an
eligible category. Your transactions of $59.11 and $5.42
from Essen New York Deli were placed under the category of
grocery stores.

Visa and MasterCard systems assign a category code to each
merchant, based on the kinds of products and services they
sell. Sometimes the system places merchants in a
generalized category, like "superstores" instead of
"grocery stores" or "gas stations."

Since the merchant in question was not assigned an
appropriate category, your purchases did not qualify for
the 5.00% cashback reward.

If you need any other assistance, you can send us a secure
message. We appreciate your business and thank you for
choosing Chase.
Now what? How on earth are they a grocery?

Unless you have maxed out via 5/24 why upgrade an existing card?  Why not get the $150 sign-up bonus?
