5% categories for fourth quarter of 2017:
Dept. stores and Walmart

There are three possibilities for how many points are earned. In the following examples, the effective rates are assuming you cash out the points for 1 cent each, but if you can transfer them to Sapphire Preferred or Ink, the effective rate could be much higher.
  • Cardholders without a Chase checking account
1 base point per dollar for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories.
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 1 point, an effective rate of 1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 50 points, an effective rate of 5%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 500 points, an effective rate of 5%.
    Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7500 points, an effective rate of 5%.
  • Cardholders with a Chase checking account in older program
1 base point per dollar plus 10% of the base points plus 10 points per transaction for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories.
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 11.1 points, an effective rate of 11.1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 61 points, an effective rate of 6.1%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 520 points, an effective rate of 5.2%.
    Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7660 points, an effective rate of 5.11%.
  • Cardholders with a Chase checking account in newer program
1 base point per dollar for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories. Annual bonus of 10% of the total of base and bonus points (until February 2016).
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 1 point on the next statement and .1 points at year's end, an effective rate of 1.1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 50 points on the next statement and 5 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 500 points on the next statement and 50 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.
Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7500 points on the next statement and 750 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.

Aside from going through my statements and adding the amounts up, is there any way to quickly see how much more I can still spend in the bonus categories and still get the 5 points per dollar (I think the cap is $1,500 in spending)?

That is the cap.

If you go to the UR page, it shows a progress bar to $75 (7500 points)--it only includes purchases that have posted and it doesnt say exactly, but it can give you some idea of how much you have left.

Rep must have been super lazy because they could have added it up the same way you did. Seems a little idiotic that Chase hasn't realized yet that it would be helpful if there would be a meter with an exact amount...

i was in food emporium and i wanted to confirm it was classified as grocery before buying the vgc. i called up, and since registration for Q2 started, she no longer had access to the grocery merchants list. i was shocked

That's crazy. They can't just be deleting stuff the day after.

I believe that Bbb has vgc
I checked out the BB&B at Gateway in Brooklyn a few weeks ago and all I saw was BB&B gift cards, not even other stores'  gift cards.

What about H&M? I've never been in one of their stores, and when searched for gift card on their website, it thought I was looking for "soft cars."

Fairly certain h&m only sells their own GCs in store.

Anybody know if Cedar Market in Teaneck and Evergreen in Monsey will get me 5% bonus? As other posters have mentioned, Chase has already changed over their website for the categories in the second quarter...

You will get 5% at grocery stores on purchases up until March 31, even if you've already activated Q2.

Not what I was asking. I was asking if anyone knows whether or not those two stores are considered grocery stores by Chase. There are some stores that even though they are grocery stores, you still don't get the 5% bonus.

And for the lucky few with the old Freedom Exclusives, it's even better!
I'm one of these lucky few. Care to elaborate how to maximize at Starbucks?

I called chase asking for my annual bonus on freedom due to having a checking account with them, and they told me they don't do that anymore, instead I get 10 points per trans every month and a 10% bonus every month on points accrued... which I have been getting every month...
I thought this was the exclusives perk for the ones who have had the card way before the change because this is what I've had since I could remember.

just by buying one cup at a time, if your coffee cost $4 you get 30 points as opposed to the rest of us who only get 20 (4x5 and an extra 10 per swipe)
I wonder what people who type "u" instead of "you" do with all their free time.

anyone ever have an issue with purchases posting after the quarter close, and not getting the 5 ppd?
i made a large purchase sunday, and its still pending.  usually if you go to UR site, it already is in your pending points, even if the charge hasnt posted, but for me, they arent there yet. if it posts tomorrow, will that be an issue, or they go after the purchase date?

Should go after purchase date. If you really have an issue Id call them. I dont see you not getting your 5ppd if you purchase before April 1st.
