5% categories for fourth quarter of 2017:
Dept. stores and Walmart

There are three possibilities for how many points are earned. In the following examples, the effective rates are assuming you cash out the points for 1 cent each, but if you can transfer them to Sapphire Preferred or Ink, the effective rate could be much higher.
  • Cardholders without a Chase checking account
1 base point per dollar for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories.
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 1 point, an effective rate of 1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 50 points, an effective rate of 5%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 500 points, an effective rate of 5%.
    Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7500 points, an effective rate of 5%.
  • Cardholders with a Chase checking account in older program
1 base point per dollar plus 10% of the base points plus 10 points per transaction for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories.
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 11.1 points, an effective rate of 11.1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 61 points, an effective rate of 6.1%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 520 points, an effective rate of 5.2%.
    Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7660 points, an effective rate of 5.11%.
  • Cardholders with a Chase checking account in newer program
1 base point per dollar for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories. Annual bonus of 10% of the total of base and bonus points (until February 2016).
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 1 point on the next statement and .1 points at year's end, an effective rate of 1.1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 50 points on the next statement and 5 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 500 points on the next statement and 50 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.
Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7500 points on the next statement and 750 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.

Just open a checking account. You can even make a nice bonus if you meet their requirements. You can also pay monthly fees if you're not careful, and I don't know if asking nicely gets that waived.
Tx wasn't sure if I needed to do anything else like link it somehow

Anyone find a Bed bath and beyond that sells the Visa gift cards that you can put $500 on as opposed to the plain $200 gift card with no option to specify an amount that you pay the $6.95 fee for just $200?
IME they don't sell those. At least in the few stores I have been to.

So have people just been buying the $200 gcs with high fees?
Any other strategy to max out freedom spending this quarter?

What do you think people are using the gift cards for? :D
Who do you think you are fooling? You think you are going to pull a quick one on your Creator? Good luck with that.

So both my wife and I have freedom cards. We are also both AU on each other's cards. I want to get the limited time  bonus on the freedom card. Should I cancel mine (or my wife's)  freedom card before applying for a new one? Or could I just apply for it even though we both have a freedom. If we have to cancel one, I would rather cancel mine as my wife is still on the old chase checking benefits.

I also have a sapphire and 2 ink. My wife only has freedom. Neither of us have applied for a card in 6 months.

Thanks

You would have to cancel first.

If I cancel today, can I apply for a new freedom tomorrow/Wednesday? Or is that too soon a turnover

Someone has reported to me that he had success in just a few days wait.
So I guess if you wait 2-3 days you can be in luck if you get approved.

Hey Dan,
Reminder to post today stars Gas on Freedom! Lets see who can find GC's!
I am sometimes accused of overthinking things. I am still mulling over whether that accusation has merit.

Is there such thing as downgrading my Chase Ink Business Plus card to Chase Freedom without causing a new credit check?

Ink is a business card. Freedom is a personal card. You can't downgrade a business card to a personal card.
