5% categories for fourth quarter of 2017:
Dept. stores and Walmart

There are three possibilities for how many points are earned. In the following examples, the effective rates are assuming you cash out the points for 1 cent each, but if you can transfer them to Sapphire Preferred or Ink, the effective rate could be much higher.
  • Cardholders without a Chase checking account
1 base point per dollar for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories.
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 1 point, an effective rate of 1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 50 points, an effective rate of 5%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 500 points, an effective rate of 5%.
    Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7500 points, an effective rate of 5%.
  • Cardholders with a Chase checking account in older program
1 base point per dollar plus 10% of the base points plus 10 points per transaction for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories.
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 11.1 points, an effective rate of 11.1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 61 points, an effective rate of 6.1%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 520 points, an effective rate of 5.2%.
    Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7660 points, an effective rate of 5.11%.
  • Cardholders with a Chase checking account in newer program
1 base point per dollar for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories. Annual bonus of 10% of the total of base and bonus points (until February 2016).
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 1 point on the next statement and .1 points at year's end, an effective rate of 1.1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 50 points on the next statement and 5 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 500 points on the next statement and 50 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.
Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7500 points on the next statement and 750 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.

I didn't realize UR are transferable to someone else's account, can this be done online? (I've seen the option to transfer between my accounts online, but not someone else's)

Do you gain anything from this, e.g. 7% annual dividends? (or is that just for spending on the Sapphire Preferred?)

Anyone ever find out if you get the 7% from points transferred into your account?

Pretty sure the 7% dividend applies on actual amount spent on the Sapphire Preferred.

Hey give the guy a break, he just had a baby....
It's 1 point per dollar plus a 10% bonus. You also get 10 points per purchase.

Where do you get the 10% bonus from?

So you don't get the 7% on the sign up bonus either? That's not considered earned points?

I emailed the customer service and they said the sign up bonus is subject to the 7% dividend. So that right there is 35k annual points if you got the 50k point bonus or 70k annual points if you were lucky enough to get the 100k.

That's awesome but your math is wayyyy off.
Can anyone else confirm that the signup bonus will get the dividend?

Sorry. Meant 3500 points. That equates to $35 if you do a straight cash back though, correct?

FYI...this was the actual message:

Thank you for taking the time to email us regarding the
rewards on your Sapphire account.

I would like to clarify that you will earn an annual
bonus, regardless of spend, and there is no cap on the 7%
dividend. The initial sign up bonus is considered earned
points and subject to the dividend.

If you have any further questions, please reply using the
Secure Message Center.

Huh?  You get 53K now for spending $3K and then 3,710 miles in 4 months from now with the dividend for a total of 56,710 miles within 4 months.

Or if you spend the 3K on any travel booked via the Chase booking tool you'll get 59K now for spending $3K and 4,130 miles in 4 months from now with the dividend for a total of 63,130 miles within 4 months.

try sending them an SM requesting a match. Also I've heard about a $250 offer so you might want to look for that before SMing

What do you guys think-One of my old cards was switched by Chase to Freedom, any chance i might get the match to $200? I know i can try but wondering if anyone got such a thing

also, is a yeshiva called a charity for their 5% categories, i know i get a tax deduction, but it might be coded differently for the credit card
