5% categories for fourth quarter of 2017:
Dept. stores and Walmart

There are three possibilities for how many points are earned. In the following examples, the effective rates are assuming you cash out the points for 1 cent each, but if you can transfer them to Sapphire Preferred or Ink, the effective rate could be much higher.
  • Cardholders without a Chase checking account
1 base point per dollar for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories.
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 1 point, an effective rate of 1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 50 points, an effective rate of 5%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 500 points, an effective rate of 5%.
    Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7500 points, an effective rate of 5%.
  • Cardholders with a Chase checking account in older program
1 base point per dollar plus 10% of the base points plus 10 points per transaction for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories.
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 11.1 points, an effective rate of 11.1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 61 points, an effective rate of 6.1%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 520 points, an effective rate of 5.2%.
    Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7660 points, an effective rate of 5.11%.
  • Cardholders with a Chase checking account in newer program
1 base point per dollar for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories. Annual bonus of 10% of the total of base and bonus points (until February 2016).
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 1 point on the next statement and .1 points at year's end, an effective rate of 1.1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 50 points on the next statement and 5 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 500 points on the next statement and 50 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.
Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7500 points on the next statement and 750 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.

old info. I know what triggered it and it doesn't anymore. even by me when it did trigger a drained gift card the money would come back on the gift card within a couple days.

potentially there were some people who lost their money in the very beginning and had to hassle to get it back but I've been loading there for a long time and never lost $

also daily limit is incorrect
bottom line is FD safe? and if yes why not updating the serve wiki? i'm in Brooklyn and MO is not really a good option only if i know a place were to go to

Vanillas should work fine at the PO.

The list was probably initially at https://creditcards.chase.com/freedom/merchants but I could not find any cache of that page with the 2016 Q4 information. I found a cache of that page from 9/11/2016, which is right before it would have had the list you are looking for. There is an earlier archive showing the list from when department stores were part of the quarterly offer for 2013 Q4, but that's no indication that the list is the same for 2016 Q4.

For now, try the Visa merchant locator. You will find that most of them are MCC 5655, so there's no reason to think they might be classified as department stores.

Was it too late? I just ordered costco cash card online with my freedom to earn 5x. I am sure it won't be shipped out before Jan 1st.

Probably too late. It would have been safer to buy it at the warehouse.

Does Q1 local commuter transportation include EZ-pass?
I am sometimes accused of overthinking things. I am still mulling over whether that accusation has merit.

What good is a FAQ if the Qs are not followed by straightforward answers?
https://creditcards.chase.com/freedom/faq includes this question:
How much cash back can I earn each quarter?

If I was wondering what the limit is, that's the first question I would click on.
The answer is, of course, $75 cash back from spending that qualifies for 5% and unlimited cash back from spending that earns 1%. But they give a useless answer instead.

That's why the first question is: How does the 5% promotion work? there you will see the maximum of $1,500, in the question "How much cash back can I earn each quarter?" they mean to ask how much a typical person is earning quarterly, they're not mentioning maximum earning

Last year, every 7/11 I tried in NJ coded as a gas station. Is there any reason to think that it has changed? Also, has anyone ever had a 7/11 NOT code as a gas station?
Thanks.

Does 7/11 accept CC for VGC?
