5% categories for fourth quarter of 2017:
Dept. stores and Walmart

There are three possibilities for how many points are earned. In the following examples, the effective rates are assuming you cash out the points for 1 cent each, but if you can transfer them to Sapphire Preferred or Ink, the effective rate could be much higher.
  • Cardholders without a Chase checking account
1 base point per dollar for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories.
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 1 point, an effective rate of 1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 50 points, an effective rate of 5%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 500 points, an effective rate of 5%.
    Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7500 points, an effective rate of 5%.
  • Cardholders with a Chase checking account in older program
1 base point per dollar plus 10% of the base points plus 10 points per transaction for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories.
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 11.1 points, an effective rate of 11.1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 61 points, an effective rate of 6.1%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 520 points, an effective rate of 5.2%.
    Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7660 points, an effective rate of 5.11%.
  • Cardholders with a Chase checking account in newer program
1 base point per dollar for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories. Annual bonus of 10% of the total of base and bonus points (until February 2016).
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 1 point on the next statement and .1 points at year's end, an effective rate of 1.1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 50 points on the next statement and 5 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 500 points on the next statement and 50 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.
Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7500 points on the next statement and 750 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.

He can just do $1k and $500 via SM.

Yea my bad. He would anyways be getting the 10 bonus points + 10%. The only that would be missing would be the extra 5% which is 750 points.

He'd (probably fight and) get the 5x, which is 7500 UR (vs SM, due to the fact that he got it in writing), he'd miss out on the 10 points (per $1) transaction with my suggested denominations.

So then why would you suggest those denominations? I'm totally lost  ???

To alleviate the issue of qualifying with 1,500 $1 transactions. Obviously the optimal way would be to do it in smallish transactions, $20-25 should fly and earn you >600 more UR points (if it's worth your hassle).

Why wouldn't 1500 x $1 transactions earn you the 10 points per transaction?

With the Chase Exclusives bonus (Google it) you get 10 pts and 10% bonus per transaction.

I know what that's all about.  That would have nothing to do with if AP is included in the 5% category or not.

Correct.

We were discussing the different ways of doing this in Steven's case where he confirmed via SM that he can get the Freedom 5% bonus via AP.

You said he probably won't get it with 1500x $1, so I suggested $1k + $500. I later suggested that if he wants to get more on the Exclusives end he can do 60x $25 or 75x $20 and he's more likely to get it manually (compared to 1500x $1).

Correct, it has nothing to do with whether AP is included or not, it has to do with how he breaks down the $1,000 AP spend. We're going in circles at this point.

Yea I'm starting to notice that.   ;)
Can you just explain to me why would you suggest doing $500 + $1000?

If he does 1500 x $1 he will only have to fight for 750 points.
If he does 500 + 1000 he will still be fighting for the same 750.
Only difference is that in the 2nd case he would lose out the extra 10 points per dollar bec he only did two transactions instead of 1500 transactions

The Freedom 5%  on $1,500 spend is 7,500, not 750, Steven wants to earn that bonus on his freedom card.

If Steven wants to do 1,500x (or 15,000x for that case) $1 transactions on his Freedom card to earn 12 points for each transaction (which he wasn't asking about), they he could do that at any point (he doesn't have to wait for there to be a 5% bonus). My bet is he'd get shut down by AP long before he hits 1,500 transactions (and probably raise some brows at Chase as well).

Did you forget about this thread?  (I know Amazon and AP aren't the same thing)

The chase freedom card gives you a 10 point bonus per purchase if you also have a Chase checking account.
My question is, will chase give me a problem if I make a lot of small charges using the freedom card? I know Dan has talked about using it for $0.01 gas pumps.  I was thinking more about buying 100 Amazon $0.15 eGift cards instead of making 1 $15 amazon purchase.  I know its kinda annoying to make all these purchases but I want to try out this method of getting 1015 points instead of 25.

So will amazon or chase give me a problem with this?  I can spread it out over some time so that they dont suspect fraud.

I never received any calls but I stopped after 50 $0.15 gc's.  I did get all the points that I was expecting.  I think I got over 2000 points while spending about $350 on the card that month.

I did buy 10 more gc's last week when I was a little bored.  Still havent heard anything.

More than that, 60x $0.15 and 1500x $1 isn't the same.

Can anyone please help with the right and appealing language to ask for the $300 match-up for the Freedom? I have never done that kind of stuff so I don't know how that works.             Also, does it have to be done via SM or I can just give them a call?

This worked for me.

I recently applied and was approved for the Chase Freedom
card with a bonus of $200. I now see that there is a
better offer for $300 offer DN52 . I feel bad that I
missed out on this offer. I was wondering if it would be
possible to apply this offer to my account.

Thank you for your assistance.

so for every amazon payment of $1000 we should be getting 5050 points? (or break it up into a buncha payments and get the 10 points per transaction ;D)
Is it 5% overall, or 5% on top of the base points?  That would make it 6150 points! (I also added the 10% bonus).
If you don't care why would you comment?

It's 5% cashback, which translates to 5,000 points for $1,000 spend, 5 points per $1.

I don't think you get this ontop of the 1 point per $1 base rate.

I believe you do. Check your previous statement with the 5% categories and you will see you still get the regular 1% cash back for your total purchases. Correct me if I'm wrong
