5% categories for fourth quarter of 2017:
Dept. stores and Walmart

There are three possibilities for how many points are earned. In the following examples, the effective rates are assuming you cash out the points for 1 cent each, but if you can transfer them to Sapphire Preferred or Ink, the effective rate could be much higher.
  • Cardholders without a Chase checking account
1 base point per dollar for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories.
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 1 point, an effective rate of 1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 50 points, an effective rate of 5%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 500 points, an effective rate of 5%.
    Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7500 points, an effective rate of 5%.
  • Cardholders with a Chase checking account in older program
1 base point per dollar plus 10% of the base points plus 10 points per transaction for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories.
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 11.1 points, an effective rate of 11.1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 61 points, an effective rate of 6.1%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 520 points, an effective rate of 5.2%.
    Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7660 points, an effective rate of 5.11%.
  • Cardholders with a Chase checking account in newer program
1 base point per dollar for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories. Annual bonus of 10% of the total of base and bonus points (until February 2016).
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 1 point on the next statement and .1 points at year's end, an effective rate of 1.1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 50 points on the next statement and 5 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 500 points on the next statement and 50 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.
Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7500 points on the next statement and 750 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.

Remember that where it says 5% there are really only showing you 4% add the first percent of included in your regular earnings
I figured that, but still that only help for right after the statement prints

Doesn't even help then, as some purchases don't post to the bonus categories until the next billing statement.

True, as my wife has one as well.

My current strategy is :
-$25+ purchases (including car rentals due to primary CDW), and foreign purchases, excluding dining, airfare, hotels, telecom, cable, office supplies, 5% category, gas, Open Savings Partners, and Gap Inc purchases on United Club.
-Purchases under $25 and 5% categories on Freedom.
-Dining, airfare, and hotels (including foreign purchases in those categories) over $10, and car rental in Israel goes on Sapphire Preferred WMC.
-Purchases at SPG hotels as well as purchases that I want warranty, return, dispute, or purchase protection on goes on Starwood.
-Open Savings purchases go on Starwood Business.
-Hyatt purchases on Hyatt.
-Telecom, cable, office supplies (including gift cards for Amazon, etc), and gas on Ink Classic.
-Gap Inc purchases go on Banana Lifetime Luxe.

I don't have an AMEX PRG right now, but I'll probably shift airfare and groceries there when I get my next one.

What does the United Club card give you? Is it worth the $300 annual fee?

I pay $100/year for it as a lifetime club member.

It gets 1.5 miles per dollar spent, no forex, United club membership, waived award expedite fees, 2 free checked bags (for you and a companion and for any additional free cardholders), premier access/boarding, Avis President's club, and Hyatt Platinum.

You can apply for it with my link my clicking on the club card tab.

Is there any way to get lifetime club membership and pay only 100 a year?
