5% categories for fourth quarter of 2017:
Dept. stores and Walmart

There are three possibilities for how many points are earned. In the following examples, the effective rates are assuming you cash out the points for 1 cent each, but if you can transfer them to Sapphire Preferred or Ink, the effective rate could be much higher.
  • Cardholders without a Chase checking account
1 base point per dollar for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories.
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 1 point, an effective rate of 1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 50 points, an effective rate of 5%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 500 points, an effective rate of 5%.
    Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7500 points, an effective rate of 5%.
  • Cardholders with a Chase checking account in older program
1 base point per dollar plus 10% of the base points plus 10 points per transaction for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories.
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 11.1 points, an effective rate of 11.1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 61 points, an effective rate of 6.1%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 520 points, an effective rate of 5.2%.
    Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7660 points, an effective rate of 5.11%.
  • Cardholders with a Chase checking account in newer program
1 base point per dollar for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories. Annual bonus of 10% of the total of base and bonus points (until February 2016).
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 1 point on the next statement and .1 points at year's end, an effective rate of 1.1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 50 points on the next statement and 5 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 500 points on the next statement and 50 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.
Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7500 points on the next statement and 750 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.

For color and future ref, I put mine through 9/29 at night (~8pm est) and went through as a 9/30 transaction with 5x

Cool to know it works with Amazon.

While with other stores you might not be that lucky.

Do authorized users have an ability to take out points from the primary account holder and combine it with their own (other) cards?

Is this quarter’s 5x bonus for PayPal only purchases or will it include sending money to another person?

The language of the new categories is "purchases made using Paypal".

Does this mean purchases only, not sending money to family and friends?
Is this quarter’s 5x bonus for PayPal only purchases or will it include sending money to another person?

From https://creditcards.chase.com/freedom-credit-cards/faq

Quote
What is included in the PayPal category?

Purchases in the PayPal category Include purchases made using your Chase Freedom card with PayPal. Purchases made using PayPal at merchants in the current 5% quarterly categories will be awarded a total of 5% Cash Back rewards on up to $1,500 in combined purchases. Payments made through the Xoom transfer service are not eligible for 5%. Must have/open a PayPal account. Please note, Friends and Family or Person-to-Person (P2P) transactions made with your Chase Freedom card on PayPal may be prohibited.

I still don't know the answer. The FAQ above is too cryptic. When Discover had PayPal as a quarterly category, sending money to friends and family got the bonus.
Try sending a small amount to see what happens.

You can use the Chase Freedom card to get you 5x On gas at BP.
All you need to use is the app to pay and you can link your card, meaning you can pay with PayPal while using the freedom.

Didn't play around with other apps for other gas stations but BP works.

technically speaking you don't need to waste your time adding PayPal if you use PayPal key as your payment method.

Anyone able to help me with this?  Applied for chase freedom August 2020 when there was $200 bonus and 5% on groceries for 12 months. Just noticed a month ago that I was only getting 1.5%. contacted chase and they wouldn't talk to me directly. I had to call back to find out the resolution. When I called back I was told I did not apply during this promotion. Obviously I did. Called again and still was unable to discuss this directly with anyone. Any other ideas?

I made a PayPal payment right after 11pm EST on 12/31/2020. PayPal emailed me immediately. But the Chase transaction history shows the transaction date and the post date as 1/1/2021 and there are no bonus points. I called Chase to request the bonus points and got nowhere. They told me that even the authorization date was 1/1/2021. I should have taken the screenshot of the Chase authorization while it was still pending.

Looking to max out the 1st quarter bonus at Costco, but i can't buy anywhere near $1500.  I saw where non members can get into the store with a shop card.  Is it possible to buy Costco Shop cards and resell them on eBay or is there a better strategy?

I'm looking to max out the Freedom bonus, not interested in other merchant gift cards.   I was wondering if Costco cards can be resold at a premium because people don't need a membership to enter the warehouse and use them.

I hear what you're asking, there was a thread here somewhere you'll have to find it...

Don't expect your premium to be more than $60 because at that price I can buy my own membership..

$60 without any offers a promos on getting the membership.

I doubt it. In fact they can be bought at a slight discount online. https://www.cardcash.com/buy-gift-cards/discount-costco-cards

Although your own wholesale club shopping for this quarter might be under $1500, you could buy Costco (or other wholesale club) gift cards for your own future purchases, to the extent that you could afford to prepay.

Not really,

Small people talk about other people.
Average people talk about things
BIG PEOPLE TALK ABOUT IDEAS.
