5% categories for fourth quarter of 2017:
Dept. stores and Walmart

There are three possibilities for how many points are earned. In the following examples, the effective rates are assuming you cash out the points for 1 cent each, but if you can transfer them to Sapphire Preferred or Ink, the effective rate could be much higher.
  • Cardholders without a Chase checking account
1 base point per dollar for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories.
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 1 point, an effective rate of 1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 50 points, an effective rate of 5%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 500 points, an effective rate of 5%.
    Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7500 points, an effective rate of 5%.
  • Cardholders with a Chase checking account in older program
1 base point per dollar plus 10% of the base points plus 10 points per transaction for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories.
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 11.1 points, an effective rate of 11.1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 61 points, an effective rate of 6.1%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 520 points, an effective rate of 5.2%.
    Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7660 points, an effective rate of 5.11%.
  • Cardholders with a Chase checking account in newer program
1 base point per dollar for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories. Annual bonus of 10% of the total of base and bonus points (until February 2016).
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 1 point on the next statement and .1 points at year's end, an effective rate of 1.1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 50 points on the next statement and 5 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 500 points on the next statement and 50 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.
Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7500 points on the next statement and 750 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.

No. It has to be bought directly from the airline

Most booking sites actually run the charge through the airline.

Why take a chance, though?

1. You can likely send an SM and get manually credited (plus that won't even count against the $1,500)
2. IME the airlines have made the charge.

Let me rephrase my question: once you have found your flights and chosen your airline, what do you gain by continuing to book with Travelocity, anyway, that's worth risking the hassle of SM? Why not go straight to the carrier's site, and book it there?

ETA: just noticed this part:
(plus that won't even count against the $1,500)
Wow. Quite a find! Then quite the contrary, we should be praying it does NOT post automatically... :o

No where on the link does it say "Chase Checking account holders get 10 bonus points per transaction and 10% more points for spending." is it a hidden feature? Or was it taken away already?

I sent an sm request but this their response....

Thank you for contacting the Internet Service Center.

I understand your concern. We confirmed that your account
ending in **** is currently listed in your Chase
Online(SM) profile and should be accessible
.

As for the Chase Exclusives, this is automatically
available with any Chase checking account at this time.

Chase Exclusives for the Freedom Credit Card:

Earn 10% additional points per $1 spent, plus 10 bonus
points on every purchase1.

Checking customers earn 10% additional points per $1
spent, plus 10 bonus Points on every purchase2.
New Freedom customers are automatically set up with
exclusive benefit.
If after 3 months they do not have an open checking
account, they will automatically be moved to
non-Exclusives product (earning 1 point per $1 spent on
all purchases).
If existing Freedom customers open checking account after
3 months, Exclusive benefits will automatically begin -
they do NOT need to apply for a new card.
If at any time customer closes checking, Exclusive
benefits no longer apply and customer will be moved to
non-Exclusives product.

does this mean that i don't need to link the two?

Just got a letter from Chase confirming Dan's post that they will be ending the Freedom-Checking bonus of 10% extra points plus 10 points per transaction for those who don't open a Chase checking account by November 30th.

Can you post the PDF here?

Upon a closer reading of his letter it was just saying that they will delink his Exclusives unless he has an active account by 11/30.  It wasn't about the rumored changes.

The best site for this is matrix.itasoftware.com not travelocity
