5% categories for fourth quarter of 2017:
Dept. stores and Walmart

There are three possibilities for how many points are earned. In the following examples, the effective rates are assuming you cash out the points for 1 cent each, but if you can transfer them to Sapphire Preferred or Ink, the effective rate could be much higher.
  • Cardholders without a Chase checking account
1 base point per dollar for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories.
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 1 point, an effective rate of 1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 50 points, an effective rate of 5%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 500 points, an effective rate of 5%.
    Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7500 points, an effective rate of 5%.
  • Cardholders with a Chase checking account in older program
1 base point per dollar plus 10% of the base points plus 10 points per transaction for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories.
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 11.1 points, an effective rate of 11.1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 61 points, an effective rate of 6.1%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 520 points, an effective rate of 5.2%.
    Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7660 points, an effective rate of 5.11%.
  • Cardholders with a Chase checking account in newer program
1 base point per dollar for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories. Annual bonus of 10% of the total of base and bonus points (until February 2016).
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 1 point on the next statement and .1 points at year's end, an effective rate of 1.1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 50 points on the next statement and 5 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 500 points on the next statement and 50 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.

Thanks everyone for the update! At this point I don't think we need everyone who gets the letter to post though.

Is there a "high" credit limit (a ceiling of how high) that they will give you or allow you to have on a Freedom card?
I know some cards have minimums.
Reason I am asking is, if I close some cards and have the CL moved to a Freedom card I want to know if at a certain point I will be told that the card can't have such a high CL.
I only paid 15% by switching to dansdeals

Re the Bold card they came in 3 types . Depends on when you got yours, and something may have changed

Ask specific questions and you will get answers. You can transfer from Freedom to SP or INK
and freely transfer UR points bewtween Ink and SP if the names are identical or a spouse

People have mentioned some problems if spouses names don't match

Re which airlines or hotels to transfer you have to decide which work best for you. Hyatt hotels
At 22 k provide great value because you can get some $800 a night rooms for that , but if there is no
Hyatt where you plan on going they may not work for you

Usually UR to UA give the best value as far as airlines are concerned

There is a lot on info scattered and I suggest you do some reading of the United thread , the Hyatt
thread and start thinking where you want to travel to

Thanks.  I don't travel much and am wondering whether its easier to sell them rather than go through the steps for some unplanned future trip.

Two specific questions:  UR points left on the Freedom accounts seem to be able to be used only for  non-travel, correct?  And, how difficult is it to use the points to go to EY?  Thanks.

1. Correct.
2. With transferring to airlines, real easy.

Thanks, Shmulyg.  I guess my question needed to be narrower.  Is it worthwhile using them for ey travel?  I know the point usage depends on carrier, but whats the ballpark, and is a three day stopover in Kenya required?

Some of the best values will be using it for business class travel as a saver level award on United, or booking an expensive park hyatt for 22,000 hyatt points.

You might be able to find a stop in Kenya, but Europe is more typical for the guys in this forum.
I remember when a coke was a nickel, and you could buy VRs in OD.

If you can be the only one to churn MR cards several times per year, why not be the only one to have FWE forever.

is the 10 point per purchase on freedom going away?
« Reply #815 on: June 12, 2013, 12:15:29 AM »
anyone get a letter from chase today talking about changes to the program?
it says
"currently you get 10% per dollar spent and 10 ppp. but the 10% bonus isnt on points earned on 5% catogories. now we will get 10% bonus on all purchases at one time each year and it includes points earned from bonuses""
it doesnt state that our 10ppp will still be in effect, doesnt say that it wont be though.
any one else get this?

So the concept of Freedom > Sapphire for any dining purchase of <$11 will be dead come August. All dining purchases regardless of size will need to be on Sapphire.

It seems so, unless you have a different card with Cat. Bonus of restaurants which outways 2 UR per the dollar (or 2.07 if you plan to keep the card till next Feb.)
