5% categories for fourth quarter of 2017:
Dept. stores and Walmart

There are three possibilities for how many points are earned. In the following examples, the effective rates are assuming you cash out the points for 1 cent each, but if you can transfer them to Sapphire Preferred or Ink, the effective rate could be much higher.
  • Cardholders without a Chase checking account
1 base point per dollar for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories.
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 1 point, an effective rate of 1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 50 points, an effective rate of 5%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 500 points, an effective rate of 5%.
    Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7500 points, an effective rate of 5%.
  • Cardholders with a Chase checking account in older program
1 base point per dollar plus 10% of the base points plus 10 points per transaction for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories.
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 11.1 points, an effective rate of 11.1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 61 points, an effective rate of 6.1%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 520 points, an effective rate of 5.2%.
    Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7660 points, an effective rate of 5.11%.
  • Cardholders with a Chase checking account in newer program
1 base point per dollar for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories. Annual bonus of 10% of the total of base and bonus points (until February 2016).
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 1 point on the next statement and .1 points at year's end, an effective rate of 1.1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 50 points on the next statement and 5 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 500 points on the next statement and 50 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.
Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7500 points on the next statement and 750 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.

When buying gift cards from the gas stations eg like buying visa gift cards from sunoco if I buy it as a 500 dollar card will it raise the ire of chase to close down my card and/or to not give me the 5 points when they see a 500 dollar charge to a gas station? anyone who's had experience with this who can help will be appreciated

It's fine. Fraud Dept. may block the charge, you can clear it up by calling them. You may also want to call and make a spend notification before you swipe the card. Just don't tell them it's for Vanilla Reloads.
I remember when a coke was a nickel, and you could buy VRs in OD.

thank a lot. Btw, is it just easier to buy them in 100-200 $ blocks, because that can technically be a legitimate charge by a gas station, or go for 500. What's your suggestion?

Easier?  Maybe.  But it's going to cost you.  There's a $3.95 fee per VR card, so if you load it with $100 you're paying a roughly 4% fee.  If you load for $500, then you're paying a 0.8% fee.

No. The fraud department is there to protect your account, not to stop you from buying the stuff that you want. Just start buying them a few times and it will establish a pattern of spend. After that, they will stop flagging the transactions.

If you're the type to be embarrassed by a decline, you can call in and set a spend notification on the card.

Thanks

I thought they're not issuing MC any more, no?

You can use it to buy from them. Are you asking if they're registered as a gas station? I'd think not, but you can ask at Costco (I think there's a list too, but don't have it handy).

There is a link to the visa merchant categorization site this should be able to tell you if Costco is considered under the gas station category.
If I am wrong please someone correct me ::)

Super! I was looking for that link, but couldn't remember where I'd seen it. For future reference: https://www.visa.com/supplierlocator/index.jsp

If you shop through the UR mall, you get 5x points at GAP.
I am sometimes accused of overthinking things. I am still mulling over whether that accusation has merit.

Freedom Annual Bonus
« Reply #936 on: January 04, 2014, 09:31:28 PM »
Hey everyone,

When will I be receiving the annual 10% bonus for having a Freedom and a chase checking account? I called Chase to ask about it but they spoke to me like I was crazy.

Thanks!

I have a sapphire that should also be receiving the bonus. If I downgrade it to a Freedom will I still receive the bonus on it?

Only the sapphire preferred comes with the 7% bonus. Try to wait until February to downgrade.
