5% categories for fourth quarter of 2017:
Dept. stores and Walmart

There are three possibilities for how many points are earned. In the following examples, the effective rates are assuming you cash out the points for 1 cent each, but if you can transfer them to Sapphire Preferred or Ink, the effective rate could be much higher.
  • Cardholders without a Chase checking account
1 base point per dollar for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories.
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 1 point, an effective rate of 1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 50 points, an effective rate of 5%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 500 points, an effective rate of 5%.
    Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7500 points, an effective rate of 5%.
  • Cardholders with a Chase checking account in older program
1 base point per dollar plus 10% of the base points plus 10 points per transaction for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories.
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 11.1 points, an effective rate of 11.1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 61 points, an effective rate of 6.1%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 520 points, an effective rate of 5.2%.
    Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7660 points, an effective rate of 5.11%.
  • Cardholders with a Chase checking account in newer program
1 base point per dollar for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories. Annual bonus of 10% of the total of base and bonus points (until February 2016).
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 1 point on the next statement and .1 points at year's end, an effective rate of 1.1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 50 points on the next statement and 5 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 500 points on the next statement and 50 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.
Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7500 points on the next statement and 750 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.

Acording to this post that Dan wrote :

There is a link to the visa merchant categorization site this should be able to tell you if Costco is considered under the gas station category.
If I am wrong please someone correct me ::)

Doesn't Costco gas only accept AMEX? (I could be wrong on that one)

For sure inside the store they only take AMEX. For gas, I'm not sure. But as it turns out I don't think they count as a gas station (as per that Visa website), so I don't think it matters much.

Has anyone had recent luck with downgrading a Sapphire to get 2 Freedom cards? What's the trick to this?

I don't see why the UR mall would be included in the 10% freedom bonus; that has nothing to do with the freedom card.

Do you get the points if you use the UR mall, but pay with a different CC?

I have a fairly low credit limit on my chase freedom card, and my credit limit has not been increased in a couple of years. This is the complete opposite of my amex card which has tripled it's credit limit over the past year and a half.

I called Chase to see what I can do, and they say it's an automatic process that occurs "every so often". When I asked them to increase my limit, they said they had to do a hard credit pull just to do so, which kind of defeats the purpose...does anyone have any ideas as to how I can get this done??????

TIA

Doesn't it say "Pay with your Chase card and the extra points you earn will be credited to your account."

FTFY

"Chase card" doesn't come to exclude other cards. Good marketing no?

What should I get. THey will only approve me for 1. Chase freedom or Saphire. (I have chase bank acct).

If I get freedom, I don't have a bother card (other then explorer) to transfer the points too?

What's your Question if 20.000 UR is more then 45.000 UR?  ;)

Or do you want we should encourage you to HUCA?

If I understood correctly, if you have a chase bank account, Freedom is better?

Does that have to be the Sapphire Preferred, or can the regular Sapphire also be used to transfer points?
