5% categories for fourth quarter of 2017:
Dept. stores and Walmart

There are three possibilities for how many points are earned. In the following examples, the effective rates are assuming you cash out the points for 1 cent each, but if you can transfer them to Sapphire Preferred or Ink, the effective rate could be much higher.
  • Cardholders without a Chase checking account
1 base point per dollar for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories.
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 1 point, an effective rate of 1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 50 points, an effective rate of 5%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 500 points, an effective rate of 5%.
    Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7500 points, an effective rate of 5%.
  • Cardholders with a Chase checking account in older program
1 base point per dollar plus 10% of the base points plus 10 points per transaction for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories.
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 11.1 points, an effective rate of 11.1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 61 points, an effective rate of 6.1%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 520 points, an effective rate of 5.2%.
    Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7660 points, an effective rate of 5.11%.
  • Cardholders with a Chase checking account in newer program
1 base point per dollar for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories. Annual bonus of 10% of the total of base and bonus points (until February 2016).
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 1 point on the next statement and .1 points at year's end, an effective rate of 1.1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 50 points on the next statement and 5 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 500 points on the next statement and 50 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.
Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7500 points on the next statement and 750 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.

I thought about that but I am looking to spend a lot.  I called the Sunoco location, Sunoco corporate and visa and no one seems to know the answer to this one basic question

There has to be a way to determine this, Dan any ideas???
I still hold best way to find out is experiment on one card... Remember it's a marathon not a sprint, and you may want to spend money in gas stations in future as well...

Time is of the essence.  5% bonus for Freedom card re:gas stations ends 3/31/14.  Even if I experiment with one card/purchase how soon after purchase can I find out merchant category

You can change the statement closing date on line.
IDK if that helps today, though.

If you have another visa like BOFA or maybe citi, buy 1 GC or a soda and when purchase posts in a day or 2, you can check online. Click on purchase and it will list category. BOFA does for sure. I think citi does as well, but I can't check right now.
All visas use the same categories. BTW, I think that sunoco has a 1999 a day on GC

You put the store and it's location in the search box, and a list of possibilities come up.  Find the one you want.  Underneath each listing is the category.
That's the way I see it.

You do not have to wait a day or two for it to post if you do the test purchase with a Citi card. You can even see the category online while it is still pending.

Are you sure that's the Visa and MC category, and not just Manta's category?

+1. Looks like they use NAICS and SIC codes (seems like some kind of government categorization system) to categorize merchants.

I dont really have time to do a test purchase before 3/31/14.

Can anybody living in Lakewood or other NJ towns area confirm whether purchases made at this Sunoco station at 2 North County Line Drive Jackson, NJ comes up as gas station purchases for the 5% bonus?

are you saying with all citi cards as soon as you swipe you can call citi or go online to see visa/mastercard  merchant category?

Not sure about MC, but for visa. (could be they use different codes) It may not be immediate, but will be soon after purchase. Try it out. make a purchase with your citi card wherever you are and see how long it takes. Click on pending purchases and then click on the purchase in question.

Greetings to all.

Last week, I went ahead and bought 1500 worth of vanilla cards at 7/11 to cash in on 5% back category...

Turns out, though, that i had not activated my account for the first quarter category spending...

Is there any recourse? Anyone have luck getting enrolled late?

Why not just activate now and go get another $1500, I'd prefer to stay low key and you still get 1ppd on first batch...
