5% categories for fourth quarter of 2017:
Dept. stores and Walmart

There are three possibilities for how many points are earned. In the following examples, the effective rates are assuming you cash out the points for 1 cent each, but if you can transfer them to Sapphire Preferred or Ink, the effective rate could be much higher.
  • Cardholders without a Chase checking account
1 base point per dollar for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories.
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 1 point, an effective rate of 1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 50 points, an effective rate of 5%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 500 points, an effective rate of 5%.
    Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7500 points, an effective rate of 5%.
  • Cardholders with a Chase checking account in older program
1 base point per dollar plus 10% of the base points plus 10 points per transaction for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories.
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 11.1 points, an effective rate of 11.1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 61 points, an effective rate of 6.1%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 520 points, an effective rate of 5.2%.
    Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7660 points, an effective rate of 5.11%.
  • Cardholders with a Chase checking account in newer program
1 base point per dollar for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories. Annual bonus of 10% of the total of base and bonus points (until February 2016).
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 1 point on the next statement and .1 points at year's end, an effective rate of 1.1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 50 points on the next statement and 5 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 500 points on the next statement and 50 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.
Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7500 points on the next statement and 750 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.

Just wondering... why do they make you manually activate, anyway? Why not have it happen automatically?

Activated by ATM machine. Cool, when made a deposit asked me if I want to activate. Saved me the hassle!

And if you're not the type of person who cares about 5x (read not a ddfer) not reason from a marketing perspective to shell out extra points

they make it pretty simple and easy to activate.  At the atm, email, text... i dont think they are counting on many people not activating it

I just applied for the freedom and chase recon told me that being that I have the freedom card already I'm very possibly not eligible for the   bonus....did anybody else experience this? did everybody else manually close their previous freedom before applying for the new offer?

The rule with Chase until proven otherwise is, if you get approved for their card you'll get the bonus.

Does this post mean you and your wife got those bonuses you were waiting for?

Chase told me that being that I have already the freedom card, my credit wasn't even  pulled-instant decline.
I'm afraid that if they pull up my application and see that I had a pull from Amex earlier today,
they might get suspicious - not worth ruining my relationship with chase for 23k UR...

Oh well...

 :(

No, it's back to the old offer. I must have missed it by a few hours. I was just wondering if I can fight it?

You can all officially go back to using SP at restaurants again.

Enjoy your slurpees in 3Q.

If you still have the old Freedom Exclusives and SP, use the following cards at restaurants for the rest of 2014:
First Friday of the month - use SP if paying $4.74 or more, otherwise use Freedom.
All other days - use SP if paying $9.62 or more, otherwise use Freedom.

My go to 7-Eleven for One Vanillas no longer lets me buy it with a credit card, same story with 2 other 7-Elevens I tried. Anyone know of a 7-Eleven in the NY area that allows you to buy them with a credit card? TIA.
