5% categories for fourth quarter of 2017:
Dept. stores and Walmart

There are three possibilities for how many points are earned. In the following examples, the effective rates are assuming you cash out the points for 1 cent each, but if you can transfer them to Sapphire Preferred or Ink, the effective rate could be much higher.
  • Cardholders without a Chase checking account
1 base point per dollar for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories.
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 1 point, an effective rate of 1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 50 points, an effective rate of 5%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 500 points, an effective rate of 5%.
    Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7500 points, an effective rate of 5%.
  • Cardholders with a Chase checking account in older program
1 base point per dollar plus 10% of the base points plus 10 points per transaction for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories.
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 11.1 points, an effective rate of 11.1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 61 points, an effective rate of 6.1%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 520 points, an effective rate of 5.2%.
    Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7660 points, an effective rate of 5.11%.
  • Cardholders with a Chase checking account in newer program
1 base point per dollar for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories. Annual bonus of 10% of the total of base and bonus points (until February 2016).
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 1 point on the next statement and .1 points at year's end, an effective rate of 1.1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 50 points on the next statement and 5 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 500 points on the next statement and 50 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.
Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7500 points on the next statement and 750 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.

a) Chase only allows transfer between spouses.  A person with the same last name living at the same address might pass, but Chase is picky.
b) OVs can be used on evolve.  $1500 is not that much.
A) ok
B) I have been doing OVs since VRs became restricted. I just wanted to make sure that there were no other alt ways for less to no fees currently.
Also, evolve is limited, and doesn't pay cc's.  :-\ I feel that if I pay my mortgages for my properties separately with $200-500 gc increments, it would assumably confuse the lenders, or depending on when I pay during the month, it may count towards the wrong period. Has anybody had issues with this?
Yah, $1,500 is a cake walk. Just 3 OVs at qualified 7-11s.  ;)

But, you could only do 4 max per bill, correct?  So, do you do $200X4 or $500X4 and pay the rest with your bank account?

Previously I used an endless amount of cards. (1 month) Now that we're limited to 4 cards a month, I worked on getting $500 cards.  I used a 1K card (can't get any anymore) and 2 $500 cards and a bit more from another card.  In the future, I expect to do 4 x $500 and the rest send a check or BB.

Assuming that your lender allows for it.  I will call Flagstar if that is possible to do as long as it is within a certain time frame.  I just don't want it to apply to principal when it should be towards the current payment.  I have a payment plan in place.  That's why.  So with the OVs recently not being allowed at WM anymore, is it safe to say that Staples GCs are the most cost effective purchase allowable at WM?

I got a transfer from my sister who lives at the same address no problem.

Have you been able to find a 7-11 that allows you to buy them with your Freedom? If so, PLEASE tell me its in the New York area.

Sure, but not in the NY area. When traveling out of NY, I have had 100% success rate with this. Most cashiers don't even blink when I buy two $500 cards in the same transaction. A few insist on ringing up each card separately, which I don't like because that's more likely to trigger a fraud alert. A few were skeptical that it could be paid for by credit card, but I urged them to try and see if it works. Of course it did.

There are many 7-Eleven stores in the New York area. I only tried one and was brushed off by the cashier and his supervisor. At that point I decided to avoid frustration and take care of this stuff elsewhere. I'm not saying you can't do this in the NY area, only that it's much easier elsewhere.

I've tried several NY area 7-11s (including one which used to allow CC) all with no success. Where "elsewhere" are you going for them? Are you from "out of town"?

My location is in my profile. The rest of the USA beyond 200 miles from my location works well.
