5% categories for fourth quarter of 2017:
Dept. stores and Walmart

There are three possibilities for how many points are earned. In the following examples, the effective rates are assuming you cash out the points for 1 cent each, but if you can transfer them to Sapphire Preferred or Ink, the effective rate could be much higher.
  • Cardholders without a Chase checking account
1 base point per dollar for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories.
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 1 point, an effective rate of 1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 50 points, an effective rate of 5%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 500 points, an effective rate of 5%.
    Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7500 points, an effective rate of 5%.
  • Cardholders with a Chase checking account in older program
1 base point per dollar plus 10% of the base points plus 10 points per transaction for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories.
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 11.1 points, an effective rate of 11.1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 61 points, an effective rate of 6.1%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 520 points, an effective rate of 5.2%.
    Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7660 points, an effective rate of 5.11%.
  • Cardholders with a Chase checking account in newer program
1 base point per dollar for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories. Annual bonus of 10% of the total of base and bonus points (until February 2016).
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 1 point on the next statement and .1 points at year's end, an effective rate of 1.1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 50 points on the next statement and 5 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 500 points on the next statement and 50 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.
Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7500 points on the next statement and 750 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.

This is a n00b question but it just dawned on me.

I just downgraded my SP to a Freedom because the AF hit. So now I have two Freedoms.

The AF also just hit on one of my SW cards. Why not just downgrade that into a Freedom too? I mean 1500 x5 x 4 quarters = 30,000 URP a year per Freedom card. Why not just downgrade all Chase cards into Freedoms? Is there a limit? Better yet... is there a record? I saw that Dan has three Freedoms.

Any thoughtful advice on an approach for this, please?

No experience but I would think not all cards can be downgraded to freedoms especially co branded cards like Marriott BA SW but who knows....report back!

You can get the three Freedom cards and spend in the 5X categories this quarter. Then when you are ready to apply for some more cards, you will be able to close one or more Freedom cards if that's what it takes to get approved.

Why only three? Like I said... Is there a limit? Is there a record?

I tried to link my brother who just opened his freedom as if I referred him even though he didn't use my referral link this is what I got in reply:

"Thank you for contacting Chase with your inquiry about
refer a friend program.

I regret that it will not be possible to add your friend
now. The referred friend has to apply using the URL on
the invitation email/Facebook/Twitter post.

However, you can refer other friends till 10/15/14.

If you have any further questions, please reply using the

How much did you lose? What's the referral amount for this card? Most people here use Dan's links, so I don't think people have so much experience with that, but it's sure worth asking.

Actually had that once. I called them and they credited my account 2,500 points and told me to call back after my friend is approved for the remaining 2,500.

Midwest...? Goldmine!
Sadly the Midwest was NOT a goldmine. One 7-Eleven said cash only (supposedly there had been a lot of fraud, because apparently there must be DDF'ers in Joliet, IL) and three in Chicago didn't have any (which leads me to believe that they sold them with CCs and someone got to them before me)

Now that I'm back in NY, has anyone had success recently in the NY area getting OV with a CC?
