5% categories for fourth quarter of 2017:
Dept. stores and Walmart

There are three possibilities for how many points are earned. In the following examples, the effective rates are assuming you cash out the points for 1 cent each, but if you can transfer them to Sapphire Preferred or Ink, the effective rate could be much higher.
  • Cardholders without a Chase checking account
1 base point per dollar for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories.
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 1 point, an effective rate of 1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 50 points, an effective rate of 5%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 500 points, an effective rate of 5%.
    Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7500 points, an effective rate of 5%.
  • Cardholders with a Chase checking account in older program
1 base point per dollar plus 10% of the base points plus 10 points per transaction for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories.
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 11.1 points, an effective rate of 11.1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 61 points, an effective rate of 6.1%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 520 points, an effective rate of 5.2%.
    Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7660 points, an effective rate of 5.11%.
  • Cardholders with a Chase checking account in newer program
1 base point per dollar for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories. Annual bonus of 10% of the total of base and bonus points (until February 2016).
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 1 point on the next statement and .1 points at year's end, an effective rate of 1.1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 50 points on the next statement and 5 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 500 points on the next statement and 50 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.
Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7500 points on the next statement and 750 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.

What are the chances that if I SM Chase CS that they would match the $200 bonus?  I want to know if I should apply for my wife now or just wait until it ever comes back again.  TIA

For non-category purchases or any purchases under $10 (excluding Ink) is it safe to say that Freedom is the go-to card? FYI I still get 10ppp along with the 10%. Is there anything else that beats this perk for said scenario?
No, you lucky duck.

Did you mean to say "For non-category purchases of under $10"? If you meant what you wrote, there are other cards that do better for non-category purchases depending on how much you value UR. Furthermore, there are purchases in specific categories between $3 and $10 that do better on other cards (e.g., spend $8 at a supermarket with AmEx BCP for $0.48 CB vs. 18.8 UR with Freedom).

I signed up for Chase Freedom and I thought that when I signed up it offered a 20,000 point bonus, when I called customer service they said that there was only a 10,000 point bonus when I signed up and the offered to give me the 20,000 point bonus anyway. Maybe a week later I got a letter in the mail it said that I would be getting 110,000 bonus points for meeting the $500 threshold. When I called customer service and told them what the letter said they said that I would get a hundred ten thousand bonus points added to my account on my next statement. Then I got a letter saying that I didn't meet the spending threshold, what is the official threshold for Chase?

I value my UR currently at .03pp, but please let me know what other cards can do better for non-category purchases. As for specific categories, what cards besides BCP are good too. Thanks.

It seems like they'd march a card you already have, to the current offer, but won't match a card that you got after the offer, to the expired offer

I always do more than 3 SMs and another few by phone. I would that is if it's worth the 10k UR to you. I read a few who got matched. Don't know if they tried within the 90 days though.

Did you ever succeed after 3 SMs rather then 2?

I've succeeded after 4 or 5 or more even. The point is to figure out how much the points are worth to you and if the time you will be spending to get it is worth it. You harass them enough and they will cave in most cases. I'd say that I've been successful 90% of the time. Chase has been really hard to deal with lately especially with recon though. YMMV

Wouldn't driving them crazy hurt my relationship with them?

I shouldn't have used "harassed." I meant respectfully request and persuade a rep to happily honor said request. There are reps out there willing to help out a loyal and/or long-term customers. Luck of the draw. Pursuance improves success rate.

Anybody????
