5% categories for fourth quarter of 2017:
Dept. stores and Walmart

There are three possibilities for how many points are earned. In the following examples, the effective rates are assuming you cash out the points for 1 cent each, but if you can transfer them to Sapphire Preferred or Ink, the effective rate could be much higher.
  • Cardholders without a Chase checking account
1 base point per dollar for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories.
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 1 point, an effective rate of 1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 50 points, an effective rate of 5%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 500 points, an effective rate of 5%.
    Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7500 points, an effective rate of 5%.
  • Cardholders with a Chase checking account in older program
1 base point per dollar plus 10% of the base points plus 10 points per transaction for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories.
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 11.1 points, an effective rate of 11.1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 61 points, an effective rate of 6.1%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 520 points, an effective rate of 5.2%.
    Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7660 points, an effective rate of 5.11%.
  • Cardholders with a Chase checking account in newer program
1 base point per dollar for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories. Annual bonus of 10% of the total of base and bonus points (until February 2016).
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 1 point on the next statement and .1 points at year's end, an effective rate of 1.1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 50 points on the next statement and 5 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 500 points on the next statement and 50 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.
Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7500 points on the next statement and 750 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.

It doesn't help me because I don't know who the seller would be for those.

The chase freedom was my first card but because I had no credit history I needed a relative co-sign the card. Now that I no longer need that relative is there a way to remove him and make me the primary cardholder? Or do I cancel my part in that card and sign up up for a brand new one?

IDK but if your only option is the second one, you can probably get the signup bonus again :)

I got my freedom and I have been following my rewards balance and I noticed I have right now over 3000 points even though I only used 149$ on it so 1. How is that possible? 2. If these points transfer 1:1 ratio to a SP that means that this is really worth it to use the freedom more than the SP and than just transfer the points no? What am I missing?

Check your statements. They will show where your points came from. Which card to use depends where you are shopping. If it's travel and dining, you get more points with SP. If it's one of the Freedom categories, use Freedom.

That's what the 2,500 points are for.

I've had my first freedom for 8 years now, and this year is the first time I'm ever meeting each 5% bonus quarter spend thanks to DDF.  Haha  More good news is that I just converted my SP into another freedom.  Now, I have twice the earning potential!  Question for this quarter is: what is the most effective way to spend the $1500X2? I've read VGC's are available at the top branded department stores, but I also hear that gas cards are available.  If the only option was to get gas cards or non-Visa gcs, how would I be able to liquidate them effectively?  Any workarounds?  Not familiar with this method yet.  TIA

The advantage of gas cards is twofold.  No fee when buying it;unlike Visa service fee.  When buying gas, you get the cash price.
Of course, there's a limit to how much gas you may need.

May not be lucrative, but you can probably sell the gas card online. Just something to keep in mind maybe.

Hi ck. It's been a while! So, which gas card is best to purchase (which dept store carries it) and what is the best use where even the cash price and service fee savings (from not buying VGCs) offset what it would be if I had just kept getting Costco or Sam's Club gas?
And $3,000 worth of gas cards (between two freedoms) is a whole lot to go through as we spend less than $3,000 a year. Haha
