5% categories for fourth quarter of 2017:
Dept. stores and Walmart

There are three possibilities for how many points are earned. In the following examples, the effective rates are assuming you cash out the points for 1 cent each, but if you can transfer them to Sapphire Preferred or Ink, the effective rate could be much higher.
  • Cardholders without a Chase checking account
1 base point per dollar for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories.
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 1 point, an effective rate of 1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 50 points, an effective rate of 5%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 500 points, an effective rate of 5%.
    Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7500 points, an effective rate of 5%.
  • Cardholders with a Chase checking account in older program
1 base point per dollar plus 10% of the base points plus 10 points per transaction for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories.
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 11.1 points, an effective rate of 11.1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 61 points, an effective rate of 6.1%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 520 points, an effective rate of 5.2%.
    Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7660 points, an effective rate of 5.11%.
  • Cardholders with a Chase checking account in newer program
1 base point per dollar for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories. Annual bonus of 10% of the total of base and bonus points (until February 2016).
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 1 point on the next statement and .1 points at year's end, an effective rate of 1.1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 50 points on the next statement and 5 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 500 points on the next statement and 50 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.
Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7500 points on the next statement and 750 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.

If I close my freedom now I would still get my 10% bonus in FEB?
Doubtful. Even if they would generate a statement showing those points, you would not be able to redeem them when the account is closed.

I posted this in the dumb mistakes thread
I had my mother apply for a sapphire and freedom as a 2bm,
And my mother didn't tell me that she had a freedom already

And she got a letter in the mail to call because she already had that card, so I figured she won't get the points even if approved.
And based on this
Are you sure that's true?
I am asking here if there is any way I can still get the freedom bonus?

I got 4 chase cards in the past 4 and a half months. (only 1 is still open though) My credit file is fairly new. (less than a year)
I don't want to miss out on this bonus, but don't want to push it to much either. Every recon is getting harder and harder.
Do you guys think it's worth a shot? (is it worth the pull)

I can't answer your question but, why not add some age to your credit history?

I'm not sure I understand you. You're saying I should avoid opening new accounts to increase my AAoA?

No, I'm saying you should add yourself as a joint account holder on an old account (or you can try to add yourself as an AU on an Amex card and somehow get them to backdate it...)

I'm already an AU on a 20 year old Chase account, but Chase recon said that, they ignore AU.

Is AMEX backdating still an option? I thought they don't do that anymore.

1)A joint account holder is different than a AU.
2) YMMV+YMMV but possible...

Hadn't thought of that. I will definitely follow up on that.

So I looked it up and it seems that most major CC companies don't anymore (or never did) allow joint ownership.

They used to allow, but stopped about a year ago.
(Current accounts weren't affected)
