+100. Are you sure it was charged, not just authorized?

I don't understand what you mean, it is now a pending transaction.

I was not born yesterday. First of all what kind of chutzpah does this Gas station have putting me through this hassle, second of all, I did not setup online access for all my credit cards - I should do it for a dollar??? (and no, there's no way I will call them!)

Have you never heard of credit cards & gas stations placing a hold? Chill, it'll show up fine when it leaves "pending transactions"

But why would they do this after I left the gas station, even if there aren't funds, there is nothing they can do?

Restaurants hold a certain percentage over the total for tips.
Vending machines usually hold the amount of the greatest possible charge at the machine

I hope that isn't true for this vending machine :P

(seriously, I'm not even sure it accepts CC.)

I'm sure it is true. You think they dispense it without auth? The most it offers is 10g.
Anyway looks like a cc slot above the cash acceptor.

I guess 10g isn't that much. I'm sure they auth, but why auth the max amount if the customer is buying less?

I know that you want to get all your charges taken care of at the same time. However as a merchant that accepts credit cards it is unfair to charge $.01 as the gas station lost money on every transaction. You could easily charge $5 on 10 cards and still be under the price of one fill up with today's gas prices.

I didn't read the article when I linked to it. I remembered reading about it somewhere, so I googled for it.

online retailers will sometimes do a $1 authorization on the card and only charge the full amount when the item ships
