That's why people usually only do it in the continental US because the risk of that happening is low.

Just did a booking at Baha Mar for my brother in law.
He checked in without issue.
Was upgraded to a suite.

Without a suite upgrade certificate globalist upgrade is only at check in upon availability

Earn two additional suite upgrade awards upon earning 60 elite nights or 100,000 base points in a calendar year
Earn an additional one suite upgrade award for passing 70 elite nights, 80 elite nights, 90 elite nights, or 100 elite nights; at each threshold you have the choice between one suite upgrade award or 10,000 bonus points

I got an upgrade ahead of time with globalist status for a 2 night stay a week or two before. They confirmed it on their end even though it didn't show on my end.
