I mean that's the risk you take in general buying certs with a 2nd guest check in at a discount. It's basically a casino with better odds. You win some, you lose some. Do you have an upcoming stay at that Hyatt?

The seller would have to call in and convert the stay to guest of honor, or if they're a non-globalist they would just gift the stay to you.  That would then allow you to check in.  There's no reason for the buyer to take any "loss" other than if a suite upgrade award was used, that can't be transferred between accounts.

No luck with any of the Honolulu properties except the Hyatt Place, where benefits were severely limited anyway. Cash second guest will just get rebooked in the actual persons name with no benefits, and award nights will need to be gifted

So even at the check in time, if the seller calls,  reservation can still be changed from second guest to gift to the buyer?

Yes. Note that I'm not sure if this is different with the Hyatt changes being implemented next year but that is the case right now.
