Is there tax in top of the free cert?

Usually not, but somethings yes. IE, in Milan I was still charged the 5 euro city tax. But no main tax, only sometimes like a nightly city tax.

Nope, they will make the reservation from their account.

You cannot apply a upgrade to a free night. Only a paid reservation or Cash&Points.

Yes, but if available the might upgrade you to a little bigger room. I had that, I used points and was upgraded to a little bigger room.

Depends what you value points and what you personally like better. You can also do cash&points then use a upgrade cert
