we can't use a DSU to get an suite-upgrade for an award night, but I think that if I use an award night with my Hyatt diamond, then I'd get some sort of upgrade (based on availability).

Having status alone can help at check-in. You just cannot confirm it before hand and use a DSU on award night.

But I was talking about asking the rooms or rev manager at a hotel directly to process a DSU. They usually won't, but they can.

I got a dsu last year, and it was not even alot of work. Just booked a regular room and emailed the hotel

Looking for a (Chase) Free night certificate redeemable also at Cat 7 hotels. Stay is in early August 2015 - so also certs which expire soon would work! PM me pls!

don't you receive 2 free nights when spending XXXX USD on the Chase card? The anniversary certs are only valid up to cat 4 and I would need a night at a hotel which is in a higher cat, thus anniversary certs would not work for me.
