Hi, I am sort of an amateur at all this, but I have been a loyal DansDeals follower for years. I'm travelling with my husband and 2 kids (both under 4) to Maui for 7 nights at the end of June 2016. We have 5 nights planned already, but we needed a hotel for the first two nights. We booked the Hyatt Regency Maui for two nights with Hyatt points (transferred from Chase UR). However, we are not "elite" or "diamond" members and w were only able to book a standard room - which could be tough since we're a whole family.

Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas on how I could book or upgrade to a suite for those first two nights? I really appreciate your help.

Welcome to the forums.
Your best bet is probably to find someone with a diamond acct looking to give away DSU.
 I believe someone just recently posted that they have.

If i want to get diamond amenities (including potential upgrade), do i need to book through someone's diamond account and be added to the resi or can I make the resi and add a diamond to the resi? I wanna use points but I might need to cancel so I don't want to transfer to someone else's account. TIA

Hotels don't have to honor Diamond benefits if the Diamond member isn't present, which is why it's best to book through a Diamond member's account through the GoH program. If you trust the person, they can transfer you back the points if you ultimately decide to cancel the reservation.
