When I remember.  Never while it's in the middle of filling up. If I realize once it's pumping,  I just leave it on. Next question : would you switch your motor on or off while it's being filled up?

In the US I always do.
Whenever I'm in Israel though I follow the crowd and leave it on.

If I'm alone in the car by a self serve station I'll usually turn it off. If there are other people in the car or if it's full service I'll usually leave it on.
