(Especially since all modern fuel pumps have anvapor recovery system and car engines are (usually) in the front , while gas caps (usually) are located at the rear of the vehicle.)
I also turn off my engine but more because I'm not interested in some bored attendant or cop to start hassling me. (True story.... someone I know was under investigation. The investigation was going nowhere and he definitely made sure to stick it in their faces. - stupid, yes I know- anyway, at one point he was observed by one of the investigators, idiling his engine at a gas station near his house and he ended up with 30 days in jail for that
