The US and NYS constitutions vest that power in the Executive alone and it is discretionary. There is no requirement that it relate to a miscarriage of justice. It is as close to temporal power as our democratically elected executive can get.

What this article and others are missing is that the reason SMR was given such a heroes welcome was because of the way he has acted since his incarceration. He has shown so many people what true Bitachon is. For all of his faults (and i agree that here and now is not the time to discuss them), he can serve as a role-model of what it means to trust that everything Hashem does is, and will be openly, good.

I've also noticed that the more "liberal" and tolerant people are on who they consider frum the more machmir they are in "dina D'malchusa." Its sad that the opposite is also true, the more "frum" people are the more likely they are to excuse illegal actions.

A very inappropriate opinion piece, especially at this time. Very out of tune with the emotions and feelings hundreds of thousands of your fellow Orthodox Jews are experincing today. This was truly a Chanukah miracle that corrected a gross injustice - that Obama ignored - and sent a decent man (who may have made some serious mistakes) back to his wife and 10 loving children where he belongs after eight years of incarceration. There is no shame in celebrating this. On the contrary it our reponsibilty as one large Jewish family to join in his celebration for having been rescued from a grossly obscene life sentence - and show him, his wife and children that he was not forgotten. Joining in this family's joy, and celebrating the Al-mighty's demonstration of Matir Asurim (freeing the captives) as one united community is the real Kiddush Hashem here.
