Lawyering this based on my T&E class in law school, that sounds like a trust, which isn't that weird. It actually seems like the most natural alternative to the library being owned by the corporation is that the rebbe holds the chassidus' items in trust for the chassidim. And without looking at anything from the lawsuit, the chassidus preceded the corporation and possibly the concept of nonprofit corporations, so it actually is probably the right answer.
