No issue with bringing in food.
Can find some snacks in Costco, but don't count on much.

Thats good, so we will bring food with us. any recommended resource on Okinawa - Best hotels, beaches, attractions etc?

What do you want to do there? There are a bunch of different beaches, both the Hyatt and Sheraton are nice but totally different properties. If you're just starting to plan you can look at Japan-guide.com to get an overview.

Sleep for 2 hours on the plane, then go to bed once you land. That's what I did (on a layover to SIN) and was fine.

I'm not sure how you define best, but one hop through Tokyo would be the most straightforward. There might be options through SEL or HKG but ANA has lots of flights from HND to OKA.

I'll be traveling to Tokyo solo at the end of this month. Thinking of trying out one of their capsule hotels. TPG had a review that makes it seem quite compelling at around $50 a night:

Thoughts?

I just tried one of the capsule hotels abt 2 weeks ago, I would recommend it for 1 night or two, not much longer since it's not the most comfortable (I can only speak for the one I went to which did did not have A.C or a fan, and they're pretty small obv)

Also, I spent maybe $20.

Cool. I'm intrigued by the concept along with the amenities. You seem to get a lot from these first cabin type of capsules vs the original style that was a bed and nothing more. Costs are much higher but compared to a hotel are quite cheap.

I'm only in town for two days and am debating doing the capsules vs the andaz. Obviously two very different experiences.

Do it! For a night it's a quintessentially Japanese exoeruence. I wouldn't stay for multiple nights but give it a go for one.

It looks as though the Andaz plays games with room availability and releasing points for nights. They do this by offering most rooms as "view" rooms with 3 different types of views.

With this being the case, I am unable to use points or Points+Cash for my stay (8/29). Any ideas on how to persuade them to release a room for me?

Have two SIM cards valid for next 21 days and have 2.5GB each of data left.
For the taking
And two JR/subway cards with value on them- but looking to get something for them.

Just checked in to the Andaz in Tokyo and I have one word: Unreal!

I'll be working on a TR soon, but some Andaz info:

-This is one of the nicest hotels I have ever been to. This is not your standard Andaz. It feels more like a PH than an Andaz. See the pics below
-They are more than happy to accommodate Kosher guests. The food & beverage director (Alistair) has gone out of his way to help me heat up meals and even order food from R Edery.
-The service is top notch despite hearing otherwise from other FT reviews. I came by to drop off my luggage yesterday since I stayed my first night at a Capsule hotel and didn't want to shlep it over there. They were happy to go and split up my food into different bags for fridge, freezer, and non refrigerated for me.
-I came to check in at 9 AM. They upgraded me to a view room even though I'm here on a SUN. They were very apologetic that I had to wait 15 minutes for the room - even though I'm checking in hours before check in time.

Here are some pics I took this morning. More to come in the TR.
