The fee to cancel or change a BA Avios ticket is $55 online or $80 over the phone. However online you can cancel an award for just the lower of $55 or the taxes paid. For a domestic ticket that means a cancellation fee of just $5.60 (nonstop one-way), $11.20 (connecting one-way or nonstop round-trip), or $10 (connecting round-trip). That’s another reason I like one-ways, I can cancel and rebook the return flight for just $5.60 and I won’t lose my outbound flight. That’s a $50 savings. Flight cancellations must be done more than 24 hours before the time of departure or else you will not get your Avios back.
After cancelling a flight just logout of your BA account, and then log back in and the points should be back in your account.
Note that you have to call to cancel a flight within 24 hours of when you booked it.  There is no fee for award cancellations done over the phone if they were booked within the past 24 hours.
When cancelling on line be sure to click through to the last page 'confirm cancellation' and then get 'Your booking has been cancelled'.
Officially you can't cancel within T-24 but I was able to on my third HUCA.
Within T-4 they are a lot stricter.

I may want to change the dates I'm flying with Avios miles. Can one save the fees by moving the flight as opposed to cancelling? Or are the fees the same and I might as well just cancel and rebook with the different dates.

You can't change a ticket within 24 hours.

But within 24 hours of booking, on the phone you can cancel and get your taxes and point back.

To cancel a YYZ-JFK flight will cost me the $50 and change for the taxes?
The JFK-YYZ flight will only cost me the $5.60 tax and the points will be refunded?

Is there a way to change the flights rather than to cancel and rebook, to avoid eating the taxes twice?

Then you pay the change fee.

Just making sure, I cannot cancel a ticket within 24 hours of departure even if its less the 24 hours since I booked the ticket, is this correct?

Just cancelled an International BA Avios RT flight on AA. The lost fees were $55 per ticket. Is that normal? I thought that it was $40 to cancel...

I made Avios reservations yesterday and then went on Finnair and added my AA FF#. I now have AA reservations and cannot find any of my flights on BA website. Do i have to change the FF# back to BA and then it will find them so i can cancel?

You have 2 confirmation #s for the same reservation.  BA has one confirmation code and AA has it's own confirmation code.  So on BA.com use the confirmation they gave you with the reservation. (While on a different tab you can pull up the reservation using the AA one. If you want to have fun.)
