The fee to cancel or change a BA Avios ticket is $55 online or $80 over the phone. However online you can cancel an award for just the lower of $55 or the taxes paid. For a domestic ticket that means a cancellation fee of just $5.60 (nonstop one-way), $11.20 (connecting one-way or nonstop round-trip), or $10 (connecting round-trip). That’s another reason I like one-ways, I can cancel and rebook the return flight for just $5.60 and I won’t lose my outbound flight. That’s a $50 savings. Flight cancellations must be done more than 24 hours before the time of departure or else you will not get your Avios back.
After cancelling a flight just logout of your BA account, and then log back in and the points should be back in your account.
Note that you have to call to cancel a flight within 24 hours of when you booked it.  There is no fee for award cancellations done over the phone if they were booked within the past 24 hours.
When cancelling on line be sure to click through to the last page 'confirm cancellation' and then get 'Your booking has been cancelled'.
Officially you can't cancel within T-24 but I was able to on my third HUCA.
Within T-4 they are a lot stricter.

BA.com doesnt recognize any of the codes they gave me :(
The 6 character string of letters and #s,  That's in the subject line of the original confirmation email?
Then you may really need to call.
In the original email there's a button "manage my reservation".  Try clicking it.

Yup. Shows that the points were deducted. I have confirmations and record locators for 3 flights on Wednesday and none of the record locators are working.

If you booked it less than 24 hours ago:
good news: you get back your miles AND your taxes  :)
bad news: You can't cancel on line and have to call.  :(

You paid $5.60 for each segment.  That's what you'll lose if you cancel after 24 hours. Be sure to cancel more than 24 hours before the flight!
To contact BA use a speaker phone.  Then play on line, do dishes, eat supper, etc.  When they finally come on, go to the correct computer tab and cancel the reservation.  The only hard downside is their insipid hold music, that some feel is made up for with their British-isms. (ie car hire,)
Good luck.

Thanks 16 minutes into a 45 minute expected hold time!!!! The window for me to cancel is from 11pm tonight to 6:35am tomorrow morning, when their US call center is closed. Would rather deal with the "insipid hold music" (+1000 for the proper use of a dictionary/thesaurus) than take the chance of losing the points.

Thanks for your help.

If you cancel more than 24 hours after booking, you lose the tax - but that's cheaper than their $55 cancellation fee.
If you have an AA card - that gives you the privilege of free AA luggage - you change / add your FF# on the reservation to your AA FF#.  The long version is written about on DDMS and here in the forums.  Search and (hopefully) ye shall find.

I planned a 3-4 day trip with my wife and baby to Rome/Amalfi. Using Avios to avoid baby fees since we were flying business/first. The outbound I was going on Air Berlin JFK-DUS-FCO and on the return I was flying British FCO-LHR-JFK. Yes I know paying close to $1K in taxes, but it was the only time I can go and it was worth my while.

I just got email from Award Wallet that the DUS-FCO portion of my flight was pushed from 8:30 AM arrival to 11:30 AM arrival would make really tight the day we had planned that day.

The question is: If I decided to cancel the whole ticket (2 seperate 1 ways), can I use the fact that the flight was pushed to cancel and get back miles and taxes? If not, and I would pay the online $55 fee per person, would I get the taxes back as well?

Thanks

I can't answer about the cancelling due to the change, but if you do cancel and pay the $55 fee you will get the taxes back.

Thanks. And I can do that online without sweating it that I'll get tax back or better to call?

Before the final 'cancel' button, they tell you what they're giving back.  So you can confirm.
It may be worth a phone call to see if they'll wave the cancellation fee because they changed the outbound flight.
