The fee to cancel or change a BA Avios ticket is $55 online or $80 over the phone. However online you can cancel an award for just the lower of $55 or the taxes paid. For a domestic ticket that means a cancellation fee of just $5.60 (nonstop one-way), $11.20 (connecting one-way or nonstop round-trip), or $10 (connecting round-trip). That’s another reason I like one-ways, I can cancel and rebook the return flight for just $5.60 and I won’t lose my outbound flight. That’s a $50 savings. Flight cancellations must be done more than 24 hours before the time of departure or else you will not get your Avios back.
After cancelling a flight just logout of your BA account, and then log back in and the points should be back in your account.
Note that you have to call to cancel a flight within 24 hours of when you booked it.  There is no fee for award cancellations done over the phone if they were booked within the past 24 hours.
When cancelling on line be sure to click through to the last page 'confirm cancellation' and then get 'Your booking has been cancelled'.
Officially you can't cancel within T-24 but I was able to on my third HUCA.
Within T-4 they are a lot stricter.

If I call in won't I need to pay the cancellation fee $55?
If you can't do something on line, most co's wave the phone fee.

I don't know.  Go into your reservation on BA and try it.

Have you tried logging into your reservation on line?  Did it give any cancellation options?  or only refer you to call?
I would HUCA and work on getting sympathy for your need to cancel.

The $2.50 we pay when booking an award ticket is a "September 11 Security Fee". From July 21'st onward, they are raising the fee to somewhere in the $5 range, resulting in ~$5 cancelation charge for a domestic Avios ticket.

The cancelation fee for an Air Berlin ticket, using BA Avios, is also $55 online?

When you go through BA, you pay their fees, at their rates.

However online you can cancel an award for just the lower of $55 or the taxes paid.
Can anyone confirm if this also applies to Qantas bookings made with Avios?
Thanks

On line, start the rigmarole.  It won't cancel until you press 'confirm' several screens away.  But they will tell you the charge for the cancellation before then.

I want the answer before the first 24 hours after reservation concludes, and your test would only work after that time.

It should.  When you book with Avios, Avios rules and fees apply.
Only baggage and boarding rules follows the carrier.  Ticketing rules goes by who you book with. - in this case Avios.

I may want to change the dates I'm flying with Avios miles. Can one save the fees by moving the flight as opposed to cancelling? Or are the fees the same and I might as well just cancel and rebook with the different dates.
