Why Is Your Amazon Seller Name A State Secret?

Over the years I've asked countless Jewish Amazon sellers for their seller or company name and each and every one of them has refused to share it. Whether I was asking in order to give them my business or just out of curiosity, they have all hemmed and hawed and gone in infinite circles to avoid sharing this one great secret. They'd rather tell me "just buy the cheapest option" than send me a link to their product.

Maybe there's a good reason, maybe it's a collective mishigas... Any Amazon sellers care to weigh in?

I assume it's the same reason kosher programs and tours don't publish their prices.

I think it also has to do with the fact that one of the main ingredients to success on Amazon, is the item you sell, so if you know his name it’s pretty easy to follow sellers and piggy back

Probably because if you see the products they sell you can then replicate. There are a lot of sellers that buy random stuff for relatively cheap products from websites that charge for shipping and take time to arrive, and then sell on Amazon for a little higher…. Many of these are very easy to replicate.

They are afraid of competition.

Nobody will tell you the product they're selling. If they do, they can close shop tom.

Both private label and branded sellers refrain from sharing their account name for one reason. A lot of time the success is being first (in private label) or having an item/line that they established. From my years selling on amazon i didn't see any upside in sharing your seller name. It can only bring competition. Especially if someone has a name on the street that he's "making its" on amazon. It might not be the one he gave the name to, but word gets around and people start coming onto the listings or sourcing the item.

I never cared to share my seller name, I have it on my LinkedIn as well. But much of the reasons posted above are correct. But I feel that nothing is secret on Amazon anyways and hasn’t been for years. If your business can’t survive someone knowing about it, well guess what, there are thousands of Chinese sellers looking at your listings as well.

Isn't it that people are wary of others seeing their ranking, feedback count etc. thus calculating how many or how few sales they have?

Anyone can look at a seller account and see how much they’re selling. It’s very accurate. There’s no secrets and hasn’t been for years.

However the sales rank has always been there, and you can know exactly how much a listing sells.

Are you concerned that your neighbor will be a lot more dangerous than the millions of Chinese sellers that see your listings? The Chinese have threatened and vandalized our account and listings with everything under the sun. It's gotten a lot miles better the last few years. If the only thing protecting your business model is obscurity, just realize anyone with the motivation can find out exactly what you do.
