I once asked someone this question. I was told that back in Europe being a wagon driver was considered a dirty job, and the women wouldn't do it. That continued even when horses were no longer the use of transportation.

In general the more to the right you go the less chance that a family owns a pet.

Most people wouldn't have their kids kicked out of school for it but they may get some funny looks.
