Why do some Jewish communities prohibit women from driving?

It's one thing to say you don't understand Kashrus.

Gedarim imposed by man should be understood.

It’s less tzinus to drive then to get a ride in the car. Not everyone can understand everything . I don’t claim to understand the way airline policies work etc.

I don’t know why driving isn’t allowed but I think that’s why I enjoy it so much. I especially love driving in KJ. Although I gotta say, the world is preggressing and I can see women driving in kJ in 10-20 years. When my mother got married (~30 years ago) no one in KJ wore an uncovered wig. Now it’s very mainstream. It’s still ‘less frum’ but the school won’t turn you away for it.

Has it become more mainstream in kj? I actually took my driving lessons in Monroe as i was spending the summer there way back when, the instructor(nonjewish) told me she had only ever given 2 ladies driving lessons & both were in the process of moving to Monsey..

The taxi issue comes with serious issues....and halachacly ( which every thread becomes)is unacceptable in way too many instances.

There are solid schools with very good hashkafa education. They don't think yiddishkeit is just about tznius at all, yet still it would be unacceptable for their graduating students to get their license

Unfortunately, that's the way rules work in our communities. You have to keep the letter of the law, and that's all that matters.

  Being in a cab with a man may be another issue but not really the lack of tzinus. Cab drivers in general are professional about their jobs. Driving is being out there so to speak honking, changing lanes, middle finger once in a while etc. That may be a tzinus issue. And for the 8th time I personally wasn’t brought up with this custom and don’t follow it but I do understand where this custom can come from and it makes sense.

However, I did also ask for more poll options, and was denied. So not my fault.

nothing really to add. what happened was, I got a phone call one day from the gabbai of the shteeble asking to meet me, when he came he asked me if its true that my wife drives and I confirmed, so he told me that he was told by the העכערע פענסטר׳ס to kick me out if I don't sign that my wife won't drive in Israel, I told to go fly a kite and he apologized but said that he needs to ask me to stop coming to the shteeble. the end
