How do i know which points to use?

although i have been a member for 3 years now - i am for the first time attempting to book an award ticket.
I have lots of point options (thanx to dan!) and want to know how to figure out which to use.
Im assuming I will save my starwoods for hotel stays, and since I fly very rarely  i should probably sell my my BA points, that leaves me with AA, continental, and MR - any difference? deals? ideas?
Im trying to book 3 tickets - 2 to LA from NY, and one from NY to Uman

use ur ba miles for the lax to jfk flight

for knowlege reasons - what made you pick the BA points to use to fly?
also any ideas for uman?
