Choosing a new Bank
« on: January 02, 2018, 04:50:34 PM »
I have been with Bank of America for years but they are raising their fees, looking to switch to a new free account that is compatible with Zelle ( sending money network). In Israel now but based in MD.
Any suggestions?

You can get Chase for free by having $500/month in direct deposit.

IINM that can be done from PayPal account. Not sure if Zelle payments would qualify. Another option (if you qualify, or get someone to qualify you) is USAA, and you can make direct deposits from there to Chase. Lastly, you can use CashApp for direct deposits (I have a rather dormant BOA business account that is free if $250 is charged on the debit card each month - Cash App is useful for that).

Another excellent option for free account is Schwab.com (no ATM fees, and fee refunds worldwide). Not sure about Zelle.

If you want to go the Credit Union route, there might be quite a few good ones out there. I find Elements Financial (previously ELFCU) to be quite decent.

Citi has (or at least had) an account that was free if you had at least $1 in direct deposit and $1 in online bill pay every month. And IINM they participate with Zelle.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

CHASE
I do bank both business and personal with BOA. I've always considered Chase but I feel they close people down the easiest.

I opened up a Chase checking account for the exclusive reason of qualifying for the Chase Freedom 10+10 or whatever it was called at the time. I avoid fees by doing an EFT transfer from my USAA account every month. Now that I think about it, I should probably close the Chase checking account, as it serves no real purpose for me now.

Another reason not to use BOA is this

I am working to get some bank accounts of my Aunt's who passed away with no children taken care of. SHe had accounts in numerous banks. Most were fairly simple to present the documents and within about a half hour we could walk out with a check. Bank of America is giving us such a run around. We are already over 2 months from when we started the process and have gotten nowhere. They ask for things and then don't acknowledge whether they got what they need or not until calling the estate unit and waiting on hold for a long time. They have set up a system to give a run around and hold on to estate funds for as long as possible.

To make things easier for yorshim stay away.

-1 there were named beneficiaries on the accounts.  Look around online and you will see widows and orphans with the same complaint. See the whole thread there.
