Even if kept mostly dormant with almost nothing there?
Unlikely.

Capital One 360 ?
+1, works very well for me especially since you can use any capitol bank location if you need to go in branch. There aren't any chase branches in MD so that won't really help the OP.

Don't need a local branch to open it. I actually use my Cap 1 account just for Israel travel. But it may be helpful if he isn't in the states anyways right now.

M&T isn't run great, but one transaction waives the monthly fee, and you can get multiple sign up bonuses.

Helps Chase card approvals.
Most cards are 5/24 so I don't see it would be worthwhile for this.

Obviously, I meant if you need to go in to the branch to take care of something.

Got it. And not exactly obvious as there are plenty of banks that won't let you open an account if there isn't a branch in your state.

They're an online bank, why would you need a local branch to open it?

You don't. I just meant it's not obvious to everyone if they don't know that.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean, why would a bank have to exceed expectations to be a good bank? If you go in knowing it's a good bank, what exactly do you need them to exceed your expectations for?

To be better then an average good bank you would have to

That's a stupid way of thinking about it IMO.

I opened up a Chase checking account for the exclusive reason of qualifying for the Chase Freedom 10+10 or whatever it was called at the time. I avoid fees by doing an EFT transfer from my USAA account every month. Now that I think about it, I should probably close the Chase checking account, as it serves no real purpose for me now.
Same here, opened because of Freedom 10+10, closed it last month since the benefit is no longer.
