How I Bought My Freezer...
« on: July 21, 2011, 12:13:20 PM »
So we were looking for the biggest possible upright freezer during the first week of July.
After searching on BB/HD/Lowes/Sears sites we settled on the Whirlpool EV250NXT, a 24.7 cu. ft. freezer.
http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_04625252000P?prdNo=4&blockNo=4&blockType=G4

The price was $899 at BB and Lowes and just $719 at Sears.  We also had 10% off at Sears from the USPS moving package.  Went into Sears and bought it for $656.  I thought I did pretty well until Sears called and said it was backordered for at least a month.

So we went into BB and went through the price-matching spiel but in the end they had no more stock of the freezer and couldn't even order it.

We called Lowe's and they said that they could still order it and that they would beat the price we paid by 10%.  When we went in they said they would beat the Sears price of $729 by 10% but not the price that we paid on our receipt.  Then they said they don't match prices for items that need to be ordered. After some cajoling (and because we had spoken to a rep earlier and told the rep what we paid) they did beat the $647 price by 10% and we walked out paying $590 and it's being delivered this week...not too shabby IMHO!

So where should we have gone after Lowes  ;)

nice.  Don't you love when they call you to tell you that there is something wrong with your order? That almost always leads to a better deal in some way.

Reminds me of the following:

A friend of mines build in gps died (beyond repair) a few days after the warranty had expired.

As the gps came with the car (package deal), they decided to cut him some slack when he complained that buying the same one would cost him 2500 euro, and its some internal error that caused damage, which is not his fault.

They (the car dealer) told him that they are almost closing, but that he left a note that the invoice should be reproduced, but lowering the price of the gps by 30%, next time he calls back.

So he called back, over and again, and pointed them out the note, dropping 30% each time, until his bill was around 500 euro.

Then he was satisfied and paid.

is there a website u used for price comparisons? or did u look each up individually?
does sears do price match as well?
also do the stores only price match to b and m stores or to online ones as well?

i am looking for a 20 cubic ft upright frost free freezer and trying to get the best price. bec i dont have a specific model in mind its harder to pin down the prices.

What you should have done is go to AJ MAdison - it is hands down the best website for Appliances and they're prices are fair and if you call them you can get all kinds of discounts. I did my entire house with them and will do my bungalow too.

This is how I got mine.
I dont need the biggest freezer, but my small one attached to the fridge doesnt quite cut it. I walked into Lowe's, They had a display model on sale. (this years display model arrived). It was a 14.1 cubic ft fridigaire upright freezer. It was origanally $457. On sale for $257. (understandibly if has a few nicks and dings but at that price.....)
I told the manager at the appliance - you know its sitting here a while..... its all scratched up..... what can u do for me.
He scratches his head, pulls out a marker, looks at me and says for $200 you would take it.
Yup! and I took it.
Now I'm kicking myselve in the pants for not bringing along a 10% coupon......

-does Amex warranty cover freezers?

Who said he's suggesting only calling that one place without bargaining?

He's simply suggesting that as a starting point this store is a good place to begin (and--apparently likely--end).

To me it sounded like he went to that store, bargained a little and then bought. Which i'm sure would not beat the price dan got
