Use or lose? Will SPG points be devalued after Marriott merger finalizes?

The largest fear for SPG fans is that their rewards points balances will be seriously devalued after the Marriott merger finalizes in 2018.

I'm thinking we are safe until at least June. But I'm planning to start converting mine to Marriott and doing nights and flights packages.

There can always be devaluations.

But I would expect Marriott will be trying to retain SPG customers and not devalue the points during the transition.

The real devaluation will be the loss of the ability to earn Starpoints, when that occurs, and having to earn Marriott points instead.
