This made me feel really happy, and I want to share it with others.

Since I started filing taxes, I was eligible for refund every year, and I never had to pay taxes out of pocket. This year, I was somewhat disappointed when my accountant told me that I would have to pay New Jersey state taxes - which, although it reflected an increase in my income, it still was an unwelcome expense in a difficult year.

How much did I have to pay? Exactly $502.

But... Yesterday, I received a check back for $500. As many New Jersians know, Governor Murphy made a deal with the moderates that he'll give a middle-class tax break if they agree to his campaign-promised millionaires tax. He structured his tax break only for people who paid state tax out-of-pocket, who have kids, who make less than 150,000 per couple, and they are entitled to get back the amount they paid - up to $500!

Thank You Hashem!

If you would have declared all your likes, I'm sure you wouldn't have got any tax breaks ;)

Great story!

So if state tax was deducted from my paycheck each month, I wont be getting the $500 refund check ?
It doesn't matter if it was withheld or you paid when you filed. As long as you paid state income tax you are eligible.
I wonder what people who type "u" instead of "you" do with all their free time.

Are you sure? I did not pay out of pocket (only had deductions from my w2), and I did not get a check.

Deductions from your W-2 are tax payments.

It means that if you have a NJ tax bill you can qualify even if that was paid by withholding, but if you had taxes withheld but when you filed you did not have a tax bill and everything withheld got refunded you are not eligible.

They didn't send them all out yet. I didn't either get one yet.

Got it.
Thank you. I got a partial refund when I filed taxes, so I am eligible.

Appreciate the interpretation .

Is this only a reimbursement of income taxes? Do you know if real estate tax would qualify as well?

People kvetch when a thread purportedly about restuarants turns into a discussion of halacha. How about this one? I come looking for Hashgocha Protis, and I find a discussion about.... TAXES! :o

My grandfather used to say "I give you a brocha (blessing) that you should pay a lot of taxes"
Rich People don’t pay taxes, your grandfather didn’t make enough money, or didn’t have a good accountant.
